A 10-man canoe traveling 170 miles on the Erie Canal from North Tonawanda to Camp Good Days and Special Times on Keuka Lake added to the picturesque landscape of canal communities recently.

Shown here as they passed through the Holley area, the six-man rowing team, some costumed as 1840s voyagers, posed for this photo.

Leaving North Tonawanda on Friday, July 13, the team expected to arrive at Camp Good Days on Friday, July 20. Captain Frank Vail (he’s the one in the French voyager costume) started "Kanoeing for Kids" because he felt the passion to help the camp because they provide much needed attention of children with life-threatening diseases. "The camp puts the kids in a situation where their illness does not make them different. It’s something they all have in common, they are just kids at camp having a good time just being kids," Vail said.

The period dress of some of the rowers helps attract attention at the stops they make along the journey, said team member Tom Dyl. Others include Wayne Harvey, Ben Vucic, Matt Roth and Bob Gerhard, and the road crew, Nancy and Bill Furey, affectionately knows as Mom and Dad because of the great care they provide for the rowers.
