SUNY Brockport's Mexican tradition awarded grant

The SUNY Brockport Department of Art was recently awarded a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities in the amount of $2,928 to help support the sixth annual Day of the Dead celebration.

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition that celebrates the belief that one day each year the souls of the deceased travel back to earth to visit their family and friends. The college will honor the holiday October 23 to November 2, with the primary day of music and festivities on October 27 in the Tower Fine Arts Center. During the Day of the Dead celebration, community members and college faculty, students and staff are encouraged to bring offerings and remembrances to decorate a community altar. Also featured during the event is an installation by Antonio Cruz Zavaleta, which will be held in the Rainbow Gallery.

The Day of the Dead celebration is a collaborative effort between the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council (GO ART!) Folk Arts Program and SUNY Brockport's Department of Art. For more information, contact the Department of Art at 395-2209.
