Ambassador Program to bring college, businesses closer

What would seem to be a natural partnership between SUNY Brockport and local businesses may have been overlooked in the past, but not anymore. Mike Andriatch of the Brockport Foundation is spearheading a new program to promote the connection between the college and businesses in the Brockport community and beyond.

The Brockport Ambassador's Program creates a give and take relationship that will benefit businesses and their employees, the college and its students.

Businesses contribute funding for the Extraordinary Scholarship program which helps attract the top students from across New York state with partial to full scholarships. In exchange, businesses receive invitations to special events on campus, use of recreational facilities at significantly reduced rates, and other opportunities.

"We're saying to the businesses, come on to campus. We want you to be here," said Andriatch.

Ten businesses have enrolled as charter members: Westside News Inc., publisher of Suburban News and the Hamlin Clarkson Herald; Agape Physical Therapy; Salon Dia; Trestle Inn; Holiday Inn Express; Realty Network; Jimmy Macs; Dominos Pizza; Arjuna Florist; and the Victorian Bed and Breakfast.

The perks offered to businesses can be tailored to meet their needs. "We're looking to have a mutually beneficial relationship," Andriatch said.

One unique opportunity offered to charter members was the chance to travel to the New York Giants training camp as SUNY Brockport football sensation Josh Warner tried out for the pro team.
