Retired Spencerport teacher to celebrate 100th birthday

When retired Spencerport teacher Mildred Snyder turns 100 on August 5, her family hopes she will have 100 birthday cards to open. The Spencerport Retired Teachers Association is helping by asking current and retired teachers to send in the cards, which they're doing. Some even had their classes make cards for Snyder.

The cards aren't the only way Snyder's family, friends and former colleagues will be marking Snyder's landmark birthday. A group of fellow Spencerport retirees will pay a birthday visit to Snyder, now a resident at Westside Manor. They will sing "Happy Birthday" to Snyder, present a few gifts and have cake made by Spencerport graduate Heidi Mueller, who owns Auntie Heidi's Bakery in Spencerport.

Snyder, who grew up in Albion, retired from the Spencerport School District in 1960 after 38 years of teaching there (she taught a total of 39 years). Shortly after her retirement, the district began offering a scholarship in Snyder's name. Several recipients are expected to be present for Snyder's birthday celebration. Snyder graduated from the Brockport Normal School in 1922. During her career she taught several grade levels and subjects including third grade and junior high math and spelling.
