Planning for disasters dinner to be held

The American Baptist Men of the Rochester/Genesee Region and Greece Baptist Church are co-sponsoring a picnic dinner and a viewing of the ABMen's Disaster Relief Trailer. The event will take place on Sunday, August 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. The site will be Dean Hall which is on the north side of Greece Baptist Church located at 1230 Long Pond Road (just north of Ridge Road West). Admission is $2 for an individual or $5 for a family.

The Disaster Relief Trailer will be similar to other trailers nationwide which the ABMen have already outfitted. They contain spartan living accommodations on board, power generation, and a stockpile of general-purpose tools. When the American Red Cross declares a disaster within New York state, this semi-trailer will be pulled to the affected area and will be used as a mobile command post to help aid in the relief. When coordinated with other agencies, it can provide timely help wherever it's needed. Although New York has moderate weather, there is not immunity from a major fire, flood, or ice storm.

The trailer will be in the parking lot and available for viewing. Ken Mullen, local coordinator, will be on hand to explain how the trailer will be transformed into a work center. Muffy Meisenzahl, administrator of the Monroe County Office of Emergency Preparedness, will deliver a presentation at 7 p.m. Lucille Everett, coordinator for the American Red Cross, Greater Rochester Chapter, Disaster Services will also be in attendance with a presentation.

This is an opportunity to learn more about disaster preparedness in New York state. This initiative, although sponsored by American Baptist Men, is open to everyone.

Attendance is limited to 200 people. Call Harold Filesat at 426-0423 or the Greece Baptist Church office at 225-6160 prior to August 22 for reservations.
