A county proposal with some kick
Monroe County Executive Jack Doyle recently selected Greece as home for a new complex that will house 22 soccer fields on county-owned land adjacent to Greece Canal Park. Residents, legislators and soccer fans have been writing in to voice their opinions. Brockport Rotary Club wins Golden Duck Award
Andy Pacitto, president of the Brockport Rotary Club, was presented with the Golden Duck Award at the August 7 BISCO meeting. This trophy is presented to the service club or community organization that sells the most Duck Derby tickets. The Rotary Club sold $1,955 worth of Duck Derby tickets. Mary Montgomery, co-chair of the Duck Derby, said that was an amazing show of community support since the Rotary Club has only 21 members. more

Change in picnic shelter reservations at Finger Lakes State Parks
Picnic shelter reservations at Finger Lakes State Parks can now be made 11 months in advance of the use date, according to Regional Director Jack Clancy. For example, reservations for next July may be made now. August 2002 reservations will be accepted beginning in September. more

Churchville board approves parking space removal
Village of Churchville trustees voted unanimously to remove two parking spaces in front of the Elmcrest Apartment building at the corner of South Main Street and Fitch Street after no residents spoke at a public hearing at the regular board meeting Monday, August 6. more

Colby Street residents file suit against town
Some Colby Street residents are not happy with the Ogden Town Board's decision to rezone a parcel of land in the northwest corner of the intersection of Colby Street and South Union Street from Residential to Restricted Business and have recently filed a lawsuit with the town as a result. "We don't object to the rezoning itself, but to the way in which it was done," said Dorraine Laudisi of Colby Street. "The town didn't look at the potential impact of the rezoning and those associated with it." more

Holley throws itself a 150th birthday bash
The Village of Holley celebrated its 150th birthday in a big way August 4. The event-filled day included an historical fashion show, music by various bands, a chicken barbecue and a spaghetti dinner. more

Garden tractors rev up for Saturday's competition
The main attraction at the Churchville Lions Country Fair is the tractors. Antique tractors will line the streets of Churchville for miles during the opening parade, the antique steam engine tractor will whistle and snort its way around the fairgrounds pulling a hay wagon all weekend, and you will hear the reving of the tractor pull from one end of the village to the other. more

Lions Club leader says community needs foremost in club's work
The new Churchville Lions Club President Joe DeLeo said he expects a great turnout for the country fair next weekend. "It’s been a growing event every year," he said. "The way we do our event must be the right way." more

Agnes M. Seneway appointed to Hilton Board of Education
The Hilton Central School District Board of Education has appointed Agnes M. Seneway, 36 East Wautoma Beach, Hilton, to fill the position on the board vacated by the resignation of Dr. James Giordano. Dr. Giordano was elected at the annual Board Election in May and resigned his seat effective July 3, 2001. Ms. Seneway, a retired teacher in the Hilton School District, will assume the position at the board's September 11 meeting and serve until the annual board election in May 2002. more

Deadline extended for annual Arts Awards Commission
The Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester will commission a local artist to create an award for the 2001 honorees of the Arts Council's Arts Awards. The Arts Council annually recognizes outstanding contributions in the arts. This year the categories are: Business/Foundation, Cultural Organization, Individual, Literary Artist, Media Artist, Performing Artist and Visual Artist. more

Prevailing dry weather conditions are impacting agricultural production especially for crops such as soybeans, corn and early processing vegetables, according to Agricultural Specialist Bob King. more

Hunter Safety course scheduled

Springdale Farm debuts maze August 20
A new cornfield maze will open August 20 at Springdale Farm, 696 Colby Street, Spencerport, with a grand opening celebration on Saturday, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's theme is "Escape from Egypt." Maze-goers can maximize their abilities as individuals or in groups to master the maze and learn about Egypt and Egyptian agriculture as kernels of information are picked up along the trail. more

After years of planning and many meetings, Hiscock-Fishbaugh American Legion Post 788 has approval to construct a Veteran's Memorial in the village of Hilton. more

Bare bones budget not the end of the fight
Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester, Chili, Wheatland) said that the Legislature reluctantly passed the Governor's proposed budget because, "the governor's insistence on a budget plan that cuts education aid and health care, and fails to address the state's troubled economy has created an atmosphere of crisis for schools and uncertainty for New Yorkers." more

Careers in education conference will become an annual event
Area schools are encouraging students to think about careers in teaching. In May, more than 250 students explored careers in education at the Think About Teaching Conference at Nazareth College. A collaboration by Monroe County school districts, area colleges, universities and advocacy groups, the conference was so successful that plans are already underway for next year's event, tentatively scheduled for March 2002. more

Hilton K-6 Elementary Summer Learning Program in full swing
The Hilton School District's Elementary Summer Learning Program entered its third year this summer. The program is held at the Quest Elementary School, 225 West Avenue, Hilton from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 23-August 17. more

Monroe County and RIT partner to prepare for bioterrorist threats
A number of upstate New York emergency workers will know how to deal with bioterrorism, thanks to a federal grant to develop a model bioterrorist response system designed to teach ambulance, firefighter, police and hospital workers. more

Spencerport district residents sought for Advisory Committees
Spencerport Central Schools invites district parents, employers and community members to serve on its advisory councils for the 2001-2002 school year. Advisory councils meet at least quarterly. more

Tourney raises program funds
Spencerport High School's second Chipping in for Career Connections golf tournament raised $2,039 for the district's School-to-Career program. The money raised, $600 more than last year, will be used for career scholarships and for the high school's career day event, planned for March 2002. more

Hilton-Parma Seniors plan trip
Plans have been made by the Hilton-Parma Senior Citizens for a one-day trip to the Amish country of New York state. Included in this trip is a complete Amish home tour in a modern home converted for simpler living. Lunch will also be in an Amish home with the meal being served family style. Also included is a stop at an Amish store, a horse-drawn ride, and an 1800s schoolhouse visit. more

Working with rural elderly
Coordinated Care, Community Concern, The NYS Division of Veteran's Affairs and Southtown's Rural Preservation present the 3rd Annual Working with Rural Elderly Conference for human service agencies providing services to the elderly in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee, Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties. more

Andy Greer, an 18-year college coach veteran, was named assistant coach/scout for Head Coach Jeff Van Gundy, the New York Knickerbockers announced last week. more

Bocce courts open at Ontario Beach Park
Two new bocce courts have been added at Ontario Beach Park. The courts are east of the bath house between Pat's Coffee Stand and Beach Avenue. more

Inaugural 5K run for Lakeside Health System
The new Lakeside 5K Race is scheduled for September 15. Recreational and amateur runners are invited to participate in what is sure to become an annual event in Brockport. The course will begin on West Avenue, adjacent to the hospital, continue toward Redman Road, turn towards the canal and follow the canal back to the start/finish area. more

Local sailors "Race for Hope" at The Hospice Regatta on August 25
The Hospice Regatta, the Rochester area's original charity sailing race, will be held on Saturday, August 25, hosted by the Rochester Yacht Club (RYC), 5555 St. Paul Blvd. in Irondequoit. more

September goose hunting comes to Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
The Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is extending the waterfowl hunting program to include the state's September goose season. Goose hunting will operate in the same manner as the regular waterfowl season. Hunting will only be allowed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from September 1 through September 25, and will take place from designated hunt stands. more
