Hilton K-6 Elementary Summer Learning Program in full swing

The Hilton School District's Elementary Summer Learning Program entered its third year this summer. The program is held at the Quest Elementary School, 225 West Avenue, Hilton from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 23-August 17.

There are 260 students and 22 teachers participating this summer, according to Summer School Principal Karen Bolinger. "The Elementary Summer Learning Program is designed to support and enrich our students," she said. "Preference was given to Hilton K-6 students who were currently receiving academic support services or who performed below the N.Y.S. reference point on state tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics."

Students in teachers Stacey Sackett and Melanie Meyers' second and third grade classrooms have a mission in mind. "We're all about business!" students proclaim as they prepare for the opening of the "Sports Clips and Chips" restaurant August 14-15 right in their classroom. Using their mathematical and language arts skills, students worked in groups to figure out how to convince investors to back their business; sold stocks to families and friends raising $300, a portion of which as well as all proceeds from the restaurant will be donated to Camp Good Days and Special Times; listed items to be purchased at the local Hilton grocery store, the Big-M; created a menu and business card; and took a field trip to the store to purchase supplies. The restaurant is open by reservation: 392-1000 extension 6166/6165. With sandwiches, pretzels, fruit and vegetables on the menu, students are expectantly awaiting the grand opening on Tuesday. All openings were filled on a first-come, first served basis. Students in Hilton Central School District grades K-6 classroom were eligible to apply.
