"Audrey's Room" dedicated in former Hamlin resident's memory
On July 23, 2001, a large, newly renovated room was dedicated as a hospice suite in the Livingston County Mt. Morris Skilled Nursing Facility. This happened due to the short stay of a woman from Monroe County, Audrey Schildt. Mrs. Schildt lived on Walker Road in the Town of Hamlin most of her life, only moving down the road from her parents homestead when she married. She devoted her life to being a farmer's wife and mother to two daughters, Donna (Avery) and Beverly (Verschage), grandmother of eight and great grandmother of 15. more

Clarkson officials find Handicapped accessibility costs high

Public input requested for L.O. Parkway safety study
Anyone interested in the safety study of the Lake Ontario State Parkway (LOSP) is invited to attend one of the two public meetings that will be held later this month. The results of the study that focuses on accidents involving bicyclists and pedestrians will be presented. Attendees will also have an opportunity to provide input from their point of interest. These meetings are the second attempt to include public input. more

some soccer complex neighbors say
Muriel Albright loves sports, but she's not too thrilled with the traffic that could be parked in her backyard. Albright's home on 2106 Manitou Road is included on Greece's 101 Historical Homes list. If something isn't done to alter the soccer complex proposal, which would allow for 22 fields and approximately 2,000 parking spaces, Albright's home isn't the only thing that will be history, she says. more

United in Service international campaign goal
Churchville Lion John Rabideau made local Lion history in April when club members from across the state gathered in Saratoga Springs and elected him as their candidate for the International Board of Directors for Lions Clubs International. more

Canal trail tenders needed
Brockport area groups are invited to volunteer to participate in the Adopt-A-Trail program of the NYS Canal Corporation and the Canalway Trails Association of New York. The Town of Sweden is sponsoring the project within its boundaries. more

The Rochester Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) offers Fall Foliage Railroad Excursions from Sodus, New York beginning in September. more

Hilton Board of Education sets tax levey
At its regular board meeting on August 7, the Hilton Board of Education ap-proved the tax levy for the 2001-02 school year to be apportioned between the district's four towns: Parma, Greece, Hamlin and Clarkson. The board ap-proved a levy of $20,260,199 which is unchanged from the amount projected in the budget approved by voters in May. more

Historic House walking tour offered during Clarkson festival
The Clarkson Historical Society will sponsor a "Historic House" walking tour to be held during the Clarkson Good Neighbor Festival on Saturday, September 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. All the structures are located within walking distance scattered throughout the Clarkson Historical Overlay District. more

The Holley Rod & Gun Club's Hunter Safety instructor team will be holding the New York State Basic Hunter Education Course at the club grounds on Pumping Station Road, just south of the Village of Holley. more

Ogden Skate Park dedication August 26
The dedication of the Ogden Skate Park to Peter Bacher, a Rotarian who initiated the project before his untimely death in December 1999, will be held Sunday, August 26. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. followed by free food and beverages, compliments of Spencerport's Krony's Pizza and Barefoot Beverage. more

Precautions urged regarding West Nile Virus
There has been one human case of West Nile Virus reported this year in New York state. Monroe County officials have prepared a revised informational brochures which will be distributed to pharmacies, public libraries, parks, and town and village halls next week. TV and radio commercials encourage residents to execute protective measures when spending time outside. more

Public Star Party features the Moon
Members of the local astronomy club invite people of all ages to Northampton Park to view the Moon and deep sky objects through the members' telescopes. See galaxies, star clusters, and gaseous nebulae. The Moon will be in a prime time for viewing early in the evening; other deep sky objects will be better late in the event. more

Snapshots of Brockport sought for pictorial history
Historical photographs and other images of the Brockport area are needed for a pictorial history of the community being prepared by a group of five local historians. The book's authors will be Bill Andrews, former Village of Brockport official historian; Kathy Goetz, Town of Sweden official historian; Hazel Kleinbach, Town of Clarkson official historian; Eunice Chesnut, Western Monroe Historical Society historian; and Jennifer Quigley, former SUNY Brockport archivist. more

Square Dance open house
The Country Twirlers Square Dance Club will begin its 42nd year of dancing in the Gates-Chili area at Washington Irving School, 2400 Chili Avenue on Saturday, September 8. Square dancing combines good fellowship and simple exercise into an evening of fun and "Friendship Set To Music" at a very reasonable cost, according to members of the group. more

Local resident receives scholarship
A Kendall resident and St. Bonaventure University, student Deborah A. Kruger, was one of two William G. McGowan Scholars for the 2001-2002 academic year. The awards are made in honor of McGowan, a humanitarian and telecommunications pioneer who founded the MCI Communications Corporation in 1968. more

Nativity BVM School 125th Anniversary
In celebration of Nativity School's 125th anniversary, a golf tournament and dinner/dance will be held on September 22. more

SeniorNet fall registration underway
Those 50 and over who want to learn how to use a computer can register for Introduction to Computers and more advanced classes at the SeniorNet Learning Center at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester in Brighton. Classes begin the week of September 3. more

Churchville-Chili Sports Booster Club hosts picnic August 27
Churchville-Chili coaches, athletes, families and friends are invited to attend a picnic hosted by the Sports Booster Club on Monday, August 27 at 6 p.m. This annual event welcomes junior high and high school athletes in all sports (fall, winter and spring) back to school with free food and the opportunity to socialize. This year's picnic will be at Churchville Park's East-West Lodge. Admission is free, and no RSVP or ticket is necessary. more

Churchville couple brings home the Gold
On August 9, as part of the Monroe County Senior Games, a bowling tournament was held at Clover Lanes. Harold Stewart and his wife, Joyce, both won Gold Medals in their age divisions. more

Toma Karate Dojo founder receives 9th degree Black Belt
John E. Kennedy was presented his 9th degree Black Belt in the All Okinawa Karate Kobudo Seidokan Association and The Toide Seidokan Association in July. These associations were founded by Grand Master Shian Toma, a 10th degree Black Belt from Okinawa. Sensei John Kennedy was introduced to Seidokan after joining the Air Force in 1965. When in the Air Force he was placed in the Cadet program. more
