County partners with towns
to accept household hazardous waste

Monroe County's Department of Environmental Services, along with the Villages of Hilton, Spencerport, Towns of Parma, Ogden and the Eastman Kodak Company will co-host a regional Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Village of Hilton Public Works Facility, 50 Henry Street, Saturday, September 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All drop-offs are by appointment only. In addition, Volunteers of America will be on-site to collect clothing, shoes, housewares and small appliances. Tax receipts will be given for textile donations.

The following hazardous materials are acceptable at the mobile HHW drop-off site:
•Products containing mercury, such as thermometers and thermostats
•Pesticides and fertilizers
•Household cleaners
•Wood preservatives and stains
•Oil-base and latex paints
•Chemical drain cleaners
•Thinners, solvents and strippers
•Syringes/sharps
•Pool cleaners and photo chemicals
•Soaps, waxes and cleaners
•Gasoline, kerosene and other flammable products
•Antifreeze, brake and transmission fluids
•Rechargeable (Ni-Cad) and button batteries
•Driveway sealer.

The county expects to amass approximately 10 tons of hazardous material at the collection. DES, in cooperation with the Eastman Kodak Company, will properly dispose (or recycle) this material.

The Hilton, Spencerport, Parma, Ogden and mobile HHW collection is the sixth in a series of regional collections organized by the county this year.
