New magazine highlights New York's archives and history

The New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust offer a new quarterly magazine, "New York Archives." The feature articles and departments in this publication draw their content from the millions of historical records in the care of the State Archives and thousands of other historical organizations located in virtually every community in New York state.

"New York Archives" is designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. The first issue includes:

•An interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Kennedy discussing how he uses historical records to research his novels and screenplays.

•An examination of the difficulties faced by President Abraham Lincoln when writing the Emancipation Proclamation by noted Civil War authority Harold Holzer.

Recollections of Joseph Persico, Nelson's Rockefeller speech writer, about his former boss.

A regularly scheduled section, "Archives Around New York," informs readers about interesting collections of historical records in communities throughout the state. The first issue highlights a variety of human interest stories associated with records from the town of Huntington, the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, the Westchester County Library, and the Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery.

Other sections provide tips on genealogy and offer helpful hints from professional conservators on how to care for treasured family photographs and records.

The magazine also keeps readers updated about the programs of the State Archives, the Encyclopedia of New York State, the State York State Freedom Trail, and other archives-related projects.

"New York Archives" is published by the Archives Partnership Trustee as a benefit of membership in the Trust. The Archives Partnership Trust is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization established by New York in 1992 to support the programs of the State Archives, which reach out to 4,300 local governments and 3,000 community organizations around the state.
