Brandon Steinorth, of Hilton, has been awarded the Fred L. Emerson Foundation Scholarship at Ithaca College. The $1,700 scholarship is based on academic excellence and significant contributions to the extracurricular life on campus. This is the second year he has received this award. Steinorth will be a junior this fall at Ithaca where he is majoring in secondary education with a minor in voice. The 6,000 enrolled students have recently elected him as student body vice president. He has also been elected as president of Ithacappella, a men's a cappella group that has performed on campus as well as several tours across the eastern states. He is the son of Rob and Sheila Steinorth of Hilton and a 1999 graduate of Hilton High School.


Melissa Fortunato, of Rochester, has been named to the spring 2001 dean's list at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Fortunato is a doctor of pharmacy student.


Jamie Miller, of Hilton, attended Stagedoor Manor this summer, a unique theater camp in the Catskills. Youth aged eight to 17 spent three weeks rehearsing 11 shows, which were then performed for the public. Miller appeared in Perfectly Frank.


Amy Foote, daughter of Larry and Sheila Foote of Kent, graduated from Nazareth College in May and was named to the dean's list for the spring semester. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in speech language pathology at Nazareth College.


The following local residents have been appointed to the Monroe County Canal Heritage Corridor Committee: William G. Andrews of Brockport, and Kathryn Ann Steuwe, of Spencerport. The Monroe County Canal Heritage Corridor Committee was initiated to serve as an advisory group to the Western Erie Canal Heritage Corridor Planning Commission.


Kathryn Ryan, formerly of Spencerport, recently became Principal of George Roth MacKenzie Elementary School in Glen Spey, NY. Ryan taught fourth grade for twelve years at the elementary school in the Jeffersonville School District. In May 2001, she received the Certificate of Advanced Study from SUNY New Paltz with a final GPA of 3.96 out of 4.0.


Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jonathan M. Burch, son of Yvonne M. Burch of Rochester and Clifford G. Burch of Hamlin, recently graduated from the Light Armored Vehicle Repairman Course. During the course at Marine Corps Detachment, U.S. Army Ordnance Center and School, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, Burch received instruction on trouble-shooting, repair and inspection of light armored vehicles (LAV). Burch is a 2000 graduate of Umatilla High School of Umatilla and joined the Marine Corps in May 2000.


Army Pfc. Christopher J. Jackson has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia. The soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history and traditions.

He is the son of James and Laurie Jackson of Churchville and a 1998 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School. He received an associate degree in 2000 from Monroe Community College.


Army Pvt. Daniel J. Evans has graduated from basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Missouri. During the training, the trainee received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history and traditions. Evans is a 1994 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School.


Army Lt. Col. Joseph A. Rapone II has been selected to attend the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The student will partake in the Army's highest level of formal education with the mission of preparing selected leaders to assume strategic leadership responsibilities in military and national security organizations.

Rapone is a command and tactics chief assigned to the U.S. Army Military Police School at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Missouri. He is the brother of Robert L. Rapone of Hilton and JoAnn C. Kingsburg of Caledonia. The colonel graduated in 1976 from Caledonia-Mumford High School, and received a bachelor's degree in 1980 from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.


Staff Sgt. Frederick D. Smith has been assigned to the Downtown Army Recruiting Station. He will be working with administrators, students and parents of students at the School of the Arts and Wilson Magnet High School as well as Monroe Community College and Nazareth College.

He and wife, Rhonda, live in Chili with their four children. Smith is an 11-year Army veteran who was born in El Paso, Texas.


Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jonathan M. Burch, son of Yvonne M. Burch of Howard Road, Rochester, and Clifford G. Burch of Redman Road, Hamlin, graduated from the Light Armored Vehicle Repairman Course.

The LAV can be launched from a ship with the help of Navy landing craft, which transport the vehicles and crews to shore. As a Marine Corps infantryman, Burch's job is to repair and use the weapons and equipment on which he is trained to provide protective and combative services in times of both peace and war.
