approves new policies for student-athletes

The Spencerport Board of Education has approved a revision to the district's athletic code of conduct for the 2001-2002 school year. There are two key revisions.

Student-athletes are now expected to comply with the athletic code of conduct throughout the entire year, rather than just the season in which they participate in athletics, according to district officials.

The second revision is that the title has been changed to the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and Training Rules to cover the addition of behavior and hazing regulations. In addition, any involvement with police, including accusations and/or arrests anytime during the year will result in a disciplinary review and the student-athlete will be subject to suspension or dismissal from the athletic program. The revised athletic code also prohibits hazing, which includes initiation rituals that are degrading.

Parents of student-athletes who have any questions about the new athletic code can contact their child's coach or John Pelin, director of physical education, athletics and health, at 349-5171.
