Police chief search committee makes recommendation

A citizens’ committee charged with helping the Village of Brockport narrow its search for a new police chief will submit a list of candidates to the village board at its workshop on September 24.

The list includes five names, that of Acting Police Chief Doug Ziegler, two officers from the City of Rochester, one from Irondequoit, and one from Gates.

If the board of trustees accepts the list of candidates, then interviews of the candidates will be scheduled over the next few weeks, according to Trustee Mort Wexler who is also a member of the citizens’ committee.

Whomever is selected by Brockport will have to take the police chief civil service exam in March, with results expected to be released a month or two later.

Brockport has been without a permanent chief since last February when Gary Zimmer was placed on administrative leave pending a sheriff’s investigation of the village police department. No charges were forthcoming from the investigation. Zimmer retired in June.
