Salvation Army increases efforts to help New York

The Salvation Army of Greater New York, with the assistance of neighboring Salvation Army divisions, has increased emergency efforts, adding seven more canteens to bring the total of mobile feeding units to 20. More than 100,000 meals are being served each day at the disaster site. The Salvation Army has set up eight mobile feeding units (canteens) at the World Trade Center and another five at triage centers in New Jersey. Others are in key locations where assistance is needed.

Canteens have been supplied by Greater New York, Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware, Southern New England and New Jersey.

The Empire State Division of The Salvation Army, which oversees corps and service units in Upstate New York, continues to provide support, supplies and volunteers. Among them is a trauma counseling team to provide assistance with the families of victims and the recovery workers.

Some 1,200 volunteers, along with 150 officers and staff, have been employed in the emergency operation.

"Situations like this bring people together," said Major Stephen Langford, Greater New York Divisional Secretary.

In addition to the meals served, 180 emergency workers have received shelter. Hundreds of others have received counseling from Salvation Army counseling teams at the Medical Examiner's Office and other locations.

Volunteers are expected to be needed for an indefinite period of time as rescue operations continue. However, it has been requested that all individuals interested in volunteering be properly attired for the conditions. Shorts, tank tops and open shoes are not recommended. Sweatshirts and flashlights are suggested. Masks to help avoid the dust and fumes caused by the debris are supplied to all volunteers.

Offers of assistance and volunteers have come from around the world. The worst tragedy in the city's history has proven to be a galvanizing event in history, eliciting encouragement through letters, e-mails, phone calls, generous donations and offers to volunteer. The incredible demonstration of support has buoyed Salvation Army staff and volunteers as they continue emergency efforts in Manhattan's World Financial Center and other locations throughout the city.

Anyone wishing to make a donation which will be used specifically for relief efforts and recovery workers may send their gift to The Salvation Army, Empire State Division, P.O. Box 148, Syracuse, NY 13206. Checks should be made to "The Salvation Army Disaster Relief."
