On August 23, Daniel Berwick successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, "A Framework for Color Based Object Recognition and Image Indexing: Spectral and Spectral Spatial Gradients" at the University of Michigan's School of Engineering and Computer Science. Berwick graduated from Kendall High School in 1989 and from Bowdoin College magna cum laude in 1993. He married Darcy (Niven) Berwick on August 28, 1999. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and is currently studying law at Wayne State University. Dr. Daniel Berwick has been chosen to present part of his research at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference 2001 in Hawaii in December.


Jessica Mench, of Spencerport, was named to the SUNY Geneseo dean's list for the spring 2001 semester.


Russell Sage College awarded the Student Sage Award for 2001, to a number of local high school students. Included in the list of students was Kathleen Radel, of Spencerport High School. The Student Sage Award is a recognition program to honor an outstanding woman in her junior year of high school with qualities of her exemplary dedication to academic excellence, community service and intellectual debate. Recipients of the award will receive a Student Sage pin and a $3,000-10,000 annual and renewable tuition applicable scholarship.


Jessica Anne Rocco of Kendall was named to the dean's list at SUNY Geneseo for the spring 2001 semester. She is a senior majoring in Education and Special Education.

Bobby McGowan, of Clarkson, collected almost $100 in donations for the American Red Cross. Sunday, September 16, Bobby, with help from his brother Elijah, 4, spent four hours going door to door, collecting these generous donations, from neighbors at Burch Farm Estates.


Army Sgt. Kenya N. Robinson has graduated from the Army Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course (BNCOC) at Fort Eustis, Newport News, Virginia. The soldier received leadership and job specialty training during the common leader and technical training phases, which focus on leadership assessment and development. Robinson, a cargo specialist, is the daughter of Cleveland and Rosa Lee Moore of Churchville and a 1993 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, Churchville.


Cadet Lawrence P. Guszkowski IV graduated from Norwich University on May 6, with a bachelor of science degree in computer information systems. Cadet Guszkowski took a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army on May 5 and was immediately activated for duty at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He will be serving with the 35th Engineer Battalion as Alpha Company Executive Officer starting in early October. Guszkowski formerly served in various enlisted positions with the 479th Engineering Battalion in Canandaigua, New York during his four years in college. He is the son of Lawrence P. and Juana M. Guszkowski of Ogden and a graduate of Churchville-Chili High School.
