The Village of Brockport expects to interview five candidates for chief of police during the next two weeks. The candidates include four officers from other Monroe County police agencies and Acting Brockport Police Chief Doug Ziegler. Whoever is selected will have to take and pass the Civil Service Police Chief Examination in March.

In other business from the October 1 village board meeting: Trustees approved a 2002 fire department budget of $571,723 and an ambulance corps budget of $74,600. The new budgets reflect an 8.6 percent increase over the 2001 budgets, according to Village Treasurer Scott Rightmyer. The biggest cause of the increase, Rightmyer said, is insurance premiums. He allotted a 20 percent increase during 2002, following a 25 percent increase in 2001 premiums.

The Village of Brockport's share of the budget rose this year following the reassessment of all properties in the Town of Sweden. Clarkson also contracts for fire and ambulance services from the village. Based on its full assessed value of $207 million, the Village of Brockport will pay 27.94 percent of the emergency services budget; the Town of Sweden with a total tax base of $306 million will pay 41.35 percent; and the Town of Clarkson with a full value assessed base of $227 million will pay 30.71 percent.

The board contracted with Larsen Engineers to provide state-required testing of wells at the closed Brockport landfill. The village is responsible for half the cost of the monitoring of its former landfill; the other half is paid for by former Brockport industrial companies including General Electric. The total cost of one year's tests is estimated at $24,000. Testing is required for at least the next five years.

Parents from the Utica Street neighborhood expressed their concern about violence at the newly rejuvenated playground. The violence appears to be coming from young children that frequent the playground without adult supervision. The police have responded to the incidents, but no charges were filed.

The board approved the appointment of 11 residents to SPARTAC - a citizen's patrol of village streets, primarily on weekend nights.
