Kendall sweeps homecoming

The Kendall Eagles swept a pair of Homecoming soccer games September 29 as the girls defeated Elba 3-0 and the boys followed suit with a 4-1 whitewash of the School of The Arts. Between games, the Kendall soccer field was officially dedicated and named Jurhs Field after Vic Jurhs. The Jurhs family farm was formerly on the property on which the soccer field is now and he was a part of the first varsity soccer team in the school's history.

Lindsay Rodas gave the Eagles a 1-0 in the fourteenth minute banging in the fourth shot after the first hit the crossbar. In the thirtieth minute, sophomore Laura Gaesser picked up a long pass down the left sideline from Kristina Gaylord, dribbled and scored. In the second half, junior Kristina Lynch received a pass from Julie Cusimano and shot the ball from deep in the right corner of the box over the keeper making the final score 3-0.

Kendall goalkeeper Kerrie Walker faced just two shots and made one save in registering her fourth shutout of the season as the Eagles improved to 8-1 overall.

The boys made it a perfect afternoon with a 4-1 shutout of overmatched School of the Arts. Senior Jonathan Lapp scored one goal in each half, the first off a rebound of his own shot and the second assisted by Andrew Scherdin. The Eagles other goals were scored by junior Troy Tooley with a bending shot over the keeper's head after a pass from Donald Williams in the 54th minute. Bobby Cole got credit for the final tally when his shot toward the net bounced in front of the goalkeeper and over his head into the net. David Warren and Rich Williams split time in net and got the shutout.

The win was boy's coach Gary Pollock's 150th over his 13 seasons in Kendall. "We started all of our seniors today and some played out of position for awhile which led to our slow start. The other team only had eleven players with no subs, so they wore down in the second half. The win improved the boys' overall record to 9-2-1.
