Sweden's skate park construction begins

The Town of Sweden has begun construction of a skate park at its Redman Road facility. The binding will be laid on October 23, according to Highway Superintendent Craig Smith, the topping and finish will be applied in the spring.

Town representatives and Brockport high school students will meet with Skate Wave, a skate park equipment manufacturer, in the municipal parking lot on October 17 at 5 p.m. to discuss a proposed lay-out for the park.

"The only way to have a park that is successful is to get the kids involved in the planning," Smith said. The skate park will be funded in part by a $20,000 donation from BISCO. Just the paving of the skate park will cost $24,000, Smith said.

In other business from Sweden’s October 9 town board meeting:

The board approved the construction of a 30 feet by 50 feet pole building at the town park for equipment storage. FingerLakes Construction was awarded the construction contract for $12,770. Town crews will lay the pad and pour the floor, Smith said.

Smith also reported that the cost of road salt has risen from $22.80 per ton last year to $29.54 per ton this year. The town typically uses 3,600-3,800 tons, Smith said, although last year Sweden used 4,500 tons.

At a noise ordinance hearing, several residents spoke in favor of the ordinance but made some suggestions for changes in the proposal. Those suggestions are being considered by the board, which has not set a date to vote on the new local law.

The board ordered a public hearing on the fire protection contract for 2002 to be held on October 23 at 7:15 p.m. Sweden contracts with the Village of Brockport for fire and ambulance service. Under the contract, fire protection would cost Sweden $236,435 and ambulance service, $30,851.
