A soccer mom and the art of archery
Sharon Pierce, a thirty-something single mom/teacher’s aide/college student who lives in Hamlin, knew within the first few lessons that she was hooked on archery. Less than four years after that introduction, she placed first in her division at the New York State archery championships held in Rochester last April. more

Church renovations get mixed reviews from parishioners
Most of the parishioners of St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Spencerport agree that renovations to the church are needed. The stone building erected in 1914 is not, for instance, handicapped accessible. The bathroom is a precarious walk first down steps, then up steps, through the basement. There are also other necessary repairs. The controversy, however, is about the definition of the word "renovation." more

Homeland Security town meetings to be held
County Executive Jack Doyle will host a series of Homeland Security Town Meetings through the Monroe County Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP). A total of four meetings will be held throughout the community to share important preparedness information and to allow local residents the opportunity to ask questions of emergency response, planning and health officials. more

Monroe County residents will elect legislators
All 29 Monroe County legislator seats are up for grabs in the November 6 election. There are four legislative districts representing the Westside News readership. Only one features a contested race. more

National Trust announces Preservation Week poster contest
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has announced the official start of the 2002 National Historic Preservation Week poster contest. Any school, nonprofit organization or state/local government can enter to win as much as $2,000 in prizes. Preservation Week is an annual nationwide celebration that will take place May 12-18, 2002. more

No tax increase in Ogden town budget proposal
Ogden property tax rates will stay flat for the third year in a row pending the adoption of a $6.54 million budget for the year 2002. Tax rates will remain at their current level of $3.62 per thousand of assessed valuation in the Village of Spencerport, and $5.47 per thousand in the town outside the village. more

Red Cross estimates $300 million to meet
immediate needs following September 11 tragedy
The American Red Cross estimates it will spend more than $300 million over the next several months to provide ongoing disaster relief following the September 11 tragedies. By far, it is the costliest and most extensive response to any disaster in the 120-year history of the American Red Cross. more

Republican slate unopposed in Parma except for town justice post
When voters head out to the poll November 6 they will be electing Republican Rick Lemcke to his sixth two-year term. This will be his third consecutive re-election without any competition. Other Parma races are also unopposed, except for a contested race for town court. more

Sweden holds budget hearing
Sweden residents had the chance to air their views about the Town of Sweden’s proposed 2002 budget at an October 23 public hearing. The proposal includes a spending increase of $50,000 or about two percent of the total $2.99 million budget. more

Sweden supervisor, clerk and justice unopposed in November election
Although Sweden has two hotly contested town board seat races in the November 6 election, Supervisor Buddy Lester, Clerk Gail DeToy and Justice William Cody are running unopposed. more

Vroom Road water project finally gets go ahead
By Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard’s count, it’s been more than 20 years since Vroom Road residents first started trying to obtain public water. By late next spring, 57 homes should have public water for the first time. more

Job Fair set for Military Veterans
The Veterans Outreach Center is sponsoring a free job fair for military veterans on Wednesday, November 7 from 1-4 p.m. at the Danforth Community Center, 200 West Avenue. Veterans are encouraged to bring their military separation/discharge document (e.g. DD-214) if available. more

Monroe County Farm Bureau elects officers
The Monroe County Farm Bureau held its annual meeting on October 10 at the Whittier Road Party House. The business portion of the meeting included election of officers. more

Part of Washington Street, Ogden to be closed
Washington Street at the intersection of Ogden Parma Townline Road bridge will be closed Monday, November 5, for bridge installation. Closure is to begin at 9 a.m. and last until approximately 6 p.m. more

Rochester Children's Book Festival comes to Gates
On Saturday, November 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., over 30 local authors will be on hand at the Gates Public Library to autograph and sell their children's books in time for holiday gift giving. Beginning at 10:20 a.m. and every 20 minutes until 3 p.m., a local author will present a short program about his/her books or writing in the library meeting room. The event is the fifth annual Rochester Children's Book Festival. more

Certified Workforce Development Professional
Katherine A. Carman has been named Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP) by the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP). Carman has been an employment advisor at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Center for Workforce Development (CWD) for nine years. more

Churchville-Chili Middle School 'Walks for Peace'
Churchville-Chili Middle School students, parents and staff participated in a "Walk for Peace and Remembrance" walk-a-thon, in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11 and in honor of those who have dedicated their lives in service of others. more

Educational leader to speak on gifted children
Dr. Maureen Neihart, a licensed clinical child psychologist, will speak on "Promoting Optimal Adjustment in your Gifted Child: What Parents Need to Know" at Cosgrove Middle School. The evening seminar is scheduled for November 14 at 7 p.m. Neihart, who is the co-chair of the National Association for Gifted Children's task force on social-emotional issues for gifted students, will address the social and emotional issues facing gifted children. more

Hilton School District sets public meetings on capital project
The Hilton School District has scheduled several public presentations of its Capital Project to be presented to voters on December 4. The meetings are open to the public and there is no need to call ahead to make a reservation except for the Clergy Breakfast and the Lions Club. more

Hilton-Parma seniors plan day trip
Plan have been made for the Hilton-Parma Seniors' annual Christmas trip to travel to The Chapel in Williamsville on Friday, December 7 to see "The Living, Singing Christmas Tree." This is a non-denominational extravaganza put on by the congregation of this church to celebrate this very special time of year. This trip also includes a sit-down luncheon at the Flying Tigers Restaurant as well as the driver gratuity. more

Sweden seniors have a new way to exercise
Move over tap dancing, line dancing and Tai Chi, Sweden seniors have a new way to exercise. Through a $7,500 grant from the John F. Wegman Fund of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, two treadmills have been purchased and installed at the Sweden Senior Center. The grant will also fund the purchase of a stationary bicycle, if the center can obtain matching funds for a second bicycle. Sweden seniors have already said they will raise the funds to match the cost of the stationary bicycle. more

Bright Raven Gymnastics hosts Rising Star Training Camp
Bright Raven Gymnastics was selected for the second consecutive year to be the host site for the USA Gymnastics Rising Star Training Camp held October 13-14. Nearly 100 young USAG athletes from New York state had the opportunity to work with many knowledgeable coaches and officials. more

Brockport splashes Rangers
The Brockport Blue Devils finished first in six individual races, including two wins by Merideth Lewis, on their way to a 101-82 win over Spencerport in girl's swimming October 18. more

Rangers present donation to cancer program
The Varsity and JV Girls Soccer teams from Spencerport High School presented a check for $5,000 to the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program of the University of Rochester Medical Center at the Third Annual "Thriving After Breast Cancer" seminar held at the Rochester Hyatt Regency on October 20. more

Rangers sweep Penfield
Senior Justin Wass led the team with 20 kills as the Spencerport Rangers swept Penfield in boy's volleyball 25-19, 25-13 and 25-17 October 17 in a battle of the two top seeds in Section Five. more
