Churchville acquires thermal imaging camera

An MSA Evolution 4000 Thermal Imaging Camera has been purchased by the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department to benefit residents of Churchville and Riga. The high-tech equipment can help firefighters save lives and limit property damage.

The Evolution 4000 Thermal Imaging Camera (or TIC) from MSA, can improve firefighters ability to see in any type of dark, smoke-filled environment, like homes, commercial buildings, and underground facilities.

"During a fire, smoke is often the greatest enemy of firefighters," Fire Chief Greg Harmer said. "It can become so thick that we cannot see even a few feet in front of us. Firefighters put themselves at risk by entering a building 'blind' to search for victims they cannot see, feel or sometimes, even hear. This new tool can give us a new kind of vision and with it, some advantages we've never even dreamed about."

The purchase price of the high-tech Evolution 4000 TIC is the same as a new car, a sum often beyond the means of fire departments. Community fundraising events are one way the fire department can raise money to buy special equipment.

"This is an investment in the safety of the entire community," said Churchville Lions Club President Joe DeLeo. "We are pleased to announce that the membership of the Churchville Lions has decided to support the Churchville Fire Department in their purchase of an MSA Thermal imaging camera by pledging $15,000."
