'Do Not Call' telemarketing registry

New York State's "Do Not Call" Telemarketing Registry is being changed to reflect the new 585 area code in Western New York, the New York State Consumer Protection Board (CPB) reported.

For telephone customers already registered with the "Do Not Call" Telemarketing Registry, moving from 716 into the new 585 area code will not interrupt the protections of the "Do Not Call" Telemarketing law, according to the CPB. They will not have to contact the CPB or take any other action in order to keep their registrations active.

The new 585 area code began Thursday, November 15. It affects customers in Monroe, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and parts of Yates, Steuben, Ontario and Allegany counties.

Any new telephone customers in the 585 area code or any New Yorkers not registered with New York State's "Do Not Call" Telemarketing Law may register free of charge by calling the New York State Consumer Protection Board toll-free at 1-866-622-5569. Register online at www.consumer.state.ny.us or by writing to the "Do Not Call" Registry at P.O. Box 2078, Albany, NY 12220-0078.

The "Do Not Call" law is intended to restore privacy to the homes of New Yorkers and stop unwanted, high-reassure telemarketing sales calls. Nearly two million New Yorkers have registered for protection under this law, making it the largest registry of its kind in the nation.

New Yorkers who register by Tuesday, December 25 will be placed on the next quarterly update of the registry in January. Enforcement of the law will begin 30 days later for new registrants. Violations of the law can be reported to the CPB at 1-800-697-1220 or online at www.consumer.state.ny.us.
