"Canaltown Christmas" performance at local dinner
"Canaltown Christmas" will be playing Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8 at the Spencerport United Methodist Church. Curtain time is 6 p.m. Written and directed by Darla Bair, the historical fiction show revolves around the McGuire family. Son Sean and Papa are digging the canal; the year is 1823. Portions of the canal have been opened, but not the part near the McGuires. Mother hopes Sean will come home for Christmas. more

Eastman House displays moving images of Ground Zero
Images of the tragic events of September 11 and the aftermath are on display at George Eastman House as part of a new exhibition titled "Ground Zero." The 38 images focus on the World Trade Center tragedy, capturing the terror, confusion, emotion, dust, and rubble. All have been donated to the museum's photography collection by top photojournalists. The photographs featured have appeared in publications around the world, with most drawn from the Associated Press and The New York Times. more

Interim pastor chosen for Parma Baptist Church
Dr. Dean Nemecek, former dean and professor of Psychology at Roberts Wesleyan College, has been appointed the interim pastor of the Parma Baptist Community Church, 4997 W. Ridge Road in Spencerport. Since his retirement from the college Mr. Nemecek has served as the interim pastor of several area congregations including Greece Baptist, Hilton Baptist and Ogden Baptist. more

Local immigrants find special reason to be thankful this season
Standing in front of about 1,000 Slavic immigrants for the first time in their first-ever church must have felt like Christmas and Thanksgiving all wrapped into one for Pastor Gregory Kasap. more

Neighbors share war time stories
World War II Veteran Adrian Vandertang of Colby Street in Spencerport, had a story about two of his friends who are both in their 80s and also veterans of World War II. He phoned Westside News Inc., publishers of Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, asking for someone to write it. Given the times in which we are living and this amazing story of Leslie Smith and Charles Smith, it seemed important to share the story with readers. more

Chili Historical Society to hold Christmas celebration
The Morgan Manning House, 151 Main Street, Brockport, will be the setting for the December 8 dinner for members of the Chili Historical Society. At 6 p.m. punch and hors d'oeuvres will be served in the library, followed by a buffet dinner at 7 p.m. in the dining room. more

Chili Recreation Department programs
Festival of Lights-Sonnenberg Gardens - December 18. Buses leave the old Town Hall Complex at 6 p.m. and return at 9:45 p.m. The cost is $8 for residents and $10 for non-residents. This fee includes transportation, grounds and mansion. Dress warm. Reservations must be made by December 14. Call 889-4680 to register. more

Hamlin Bread and Thread conducting Holiday Toy Drive
The Hamlin Bread and Thread is conducting a holiday toy drive for the "Angel Gift Project" to benefit children in need in the Hamlin area. Last year, over 175 children were the happy recipients of gifts from this project. more

Hilton School District voters go to polls Dec. 4
Hilton Central School District residents will be going to the polls Tuesday, December 4 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. to decide on a $57.9 million Capital Project bond which will have a major impact on the district's five schools' instructional programs, safety and security as well as parking and traffic around all schools. more

Historical Society decorates Heritage Tree
The December meeting of the Clarkson Historical Society will be held Wednesday, December 5, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This month's meeting will be held in the Duryea Room of the Seymour Library. The community is welcome to attend. more

Spencerport officials invite residents to discuss
proposed water rate increase
Spencerport Mayor Theodore Walker invites all interested parties to the December 5 meeting of the Village of Spencerport Board of Trustees. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. At this meeting, there will be general discussion and presentation of proposed water rates for Village of Spencerport customers. more

Trophy deer taken in Parma
Spencerport resident Tom Burns had a very successful opening day of hunting season. Burns, a road patrol deputy for the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, said the deer was taken in Parma off Route 104 on November 19 by himself assisted by his hunting partner, Don Eichas, also of Spencerport. more

Cosgrove Middle School students in Spencerport listened closely as Aaron Costa of KRUDCO Skates talked to them about "skateboarding as a lifestyle." more

GCC hosts panel discussion on "Post-Attack America"
Genesee Community College (GCC) will host a free panel discussion on "Post-Attack America: Coping in an Uncertain Age" on Wednesday, December 5. The panel will discuss how the traumatic events of September 11 have changed the world we live in, including the long-range impact on the economy, the international political landscape, and assumptions about personal safety and job security. Local implications will be a key part of the discussion. Panel members will also respond to questions from those in attendance. Reservations are not required. more

Hilton Village Elementary School holds Health Fair
Students and teachers at the Village Elementary School, along with more than 25 visiting presenters, held a "Health Fair" last month which featured interactive ways students are made increasingly aware of the importance of personal and community health. more

Kendall students win Liberty Day Essay Contest
Three Kendall High School juniors won the "Liberty Day" Essay Contest for high school students. Christy Fessler received first place, Sheena Maynard second and Heather Meisch third, according to Kendall district officials. more

MCC breaks enrollment record
A record-breaking 16,157 students have enrolled at Monroe Community College this fall, surpassing last year's total by over 800 students and reaffirming MCC's position as the largest college in Greater Rochester. more

Peace begins with me
Twenty-three students, one student from each class in grades first through fourth, from Chestnut Ridge Elementary School in Chili shared their message "Peace Begins with Me" with Chili Senior Citizens at the senior center. more

Patalano earns awards for soccer
It was a fabulous season for the varsity girls' soccer team at Churchville-Chili High School this year, but perhaps the most surprising aspect of the season to those not part of the day-to-day activities, is the awards that have fallen on Junior Joanna Patalano at season's end. more
