SpenceRPOrt Concert Series continues

Back by popular demand is the SpenceRPOrt Concert Connection Series, a music education program for the entire family. The fifth year of this series is co-sponsored by Spencerport Central Schools, the Spencerport Music Association and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO).

Series registrants will attend three "informances" held at Cosgrove Middle School, and three corresponding RPO concerts held at the Eastman Theatre. The informances include a performance by RPO musicians, a brief talk, and a question and answer session followed by refreshments. Each informance begins at 7 p.m. and concludes at approximately 8:30 p.m.

The concerts, informance topics, and guests, as well as dates for all events are described in the series registration forms available at Cosgrove Middle School and the Spencerport Public Library. They are also being sent home with student musicians in the Spencerport School District.

The first concert of the series will be the "Gala Holiday Pops" featuring Stephan Reuss (Principal Cellist) and his two young sons, Joshua (flute) and David (French horn) who are often seen ushering RPO concerts. To the delight of the audience, Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik includes sparkling arrangements, a magnificent Festival High School Chorale and all-in-the-family selections such as the Reuss trio, at the Holiday Pops. The concert is Saturday afternoon, December 22.

Jazz aficionados will look forward to RPO Rhythm Section (Jeff Campbell, bass; John Nyerges, piano; and Rich Thompson, drums) presenting an evening of "Jazz and Its Latin Cousins." The RPO String Quartet will perform and discuss music relating to the January 12 concert. Featured works and performers include Ilya Kaler (former RPO Concert master) performing Vivaldi's "The Seasons," Rebecca Gilbert (RPO Principal Flutist) performing the Ibert Flute Concerto, Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, and Gluck's Overture to "Iphigenie and Aulis" with Music Director Christopher Seaman, conducting.

Finally, we have engaged RPO Principal Clarinetist Kenneth Grant and Second/E-flat Clarinetist Robert Dilutis to perform instruments in the clarinet family. In addition to the more familiar clarinets, the bassett horn will be explained. Featured on the March 2 concert will be Mozart's Symphony No. 29, Rachel Barton performing Mozart's Violin Concerto, No. 3 and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Maestro Jerzy Semkov will be conducting.

The fee for the six events is $36 per Spencerport district resident and $42 for all others. Series enrollment is limited to the first 100 people. Completed registration forms and checks made payable to the Spencerport Music Association should be postmarked by Saturday, December 15 or delivered to Cosgrove Middle School by the close of school on Monday, December 17. Forms and fees are to be sent to: Dr. Marcia Bornhurst Parkes, SpenceRPOrt Concert Connection Series, Cosgrove Middle School, 2749 Spencerport Road, Spencerport, NY 14559.
