Brockport/Sweden Toy Shelf donations accepted
The Brockport-Sweden Toy Shelf is in full swing for 2001. The purpose of the Toy Shelf is to ensure that all children be remembered with gifts for Christmas when parents are, for any reason, unable to provide for them. Every year, children newborn through 17 years old are able to wake up on Christmas morning to gifts, books and stocking stuffers; gifts from their parents … provided by our loving community. more

First tour pits men against the sea
Six days after I reported aboard the USS Bayonne PF-21 in Japan, we cleared Yokosuka harbor on our way to Ocean Station Victor and began our own version of "Men Against the Sea" by heading out into the teeth of a gale. It got worse three days later when, according to the deck log, "We experienced 12 continuous hours of whole gale winds (40-50 knots) with mountainous waves and suffered a considerable amount of non critical damage." As a non-swimmer, I considered the loss of our life rafts very critical. more

Flyrock from Ogden mining site causes neighborhood concerns
On November 5, Dolomite, leasor of the Manitou Sand and Gravel pit, conducted a blast to open a new lift (or level) in the quarry floor. That blast, as well as earlier blast on September 17, resulted in flyrock. According to Shirley Zicafoose, "Large rocks were rained upon residents to the south of the pit. Rocks as large as 30 pounds were blasted out of the pit onto adjacent property." more

Jimmy's murder remains as unsolved mystery
So far this year there have been 40 murders in the Rochester area. Each year, about 25 percent of the murders committed go unsolved, according to Sheriff's Department statistics. more

Village Zoning Board denies St. John's Church variances
The Spencerport Zoning Board of Appeals held a special meeting November 29 to discuss the proposed controversial renovations of St. John's Church in Spencerport. To accommodate the large crowd the meeting was held at the Spencerport Fire Hall on Lyell Avenue. The application for variances needed for construction of an addition to the masonry at the corner of Martha and Amity Streets in the village was denied. more

Warm weather impacts cabbage, wheat crops
Warm weather has affected the harvest and storage of cabbage, one of western New York's major fall crops. Cabbage can be difficult to store and manage when warm weather prevails during November and December. more

Plans are being made to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County Master Gardener Program. In honor of the many volunteer contributions made over the past quarter century, the 25th Anniversary Program Committee is trying to reach all past Monroe County Master Gardeners to invite them to a special luncheon on Tuesday, January 8. more

Angel Project benefits children
Chuck Laffin, Hilton Youth Assistant in the Security Department at Hilton High School, introduced the Angel Project to the Hilton School District a few weeks ago, Within days, unwrapped toys began to appear all over the Hilton School District ... dolls, motorized vehicles, 3-D puzzles, a basketball, skateboard, hiking boots, craft kits and even a bicycle. more

"Famous Americans" visit Holley Elementary School
"Abraham Lincoln," "Susan B. Anthony," "Harriet Tubman" and "Ulysses S. Grant" spent the week with the fourth- and fifth-graders at Holley Elementary School recently. Each day, the students learned more about these famous Americans of the Civil War era, then the actors "stepped out" of character to work with a target group of fifth-graders, who also portrayed famous Americans, on how to become convincing characters. more

29 "Little Angel Students" from Trinity Christian Preschool's three and four year old programs decorated the Christmas Tree at the McDonald's on Nichols Street in Spencerport. more

Westside Academy celebrates its grand opening
Students and staff of the new Westside Academy on Buffalo Road in Gates celebrated the grand opening of the school. In the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES-run program, students who encountered obstacles to success in a regular school setting can now learn in a smaller, more personalized environment. More than 75 people attended the grand opening including area legislators, BOCES 2 Board members and staff, community members, and principals and staff from area high schools. more

Messiah College's junior defender Aaron Faro (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 2001 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer All-American Team. more

H-P Recreation offers tumbling/gymnastics classes
Hilton-Parma Recreation is excited to announce a short Tumbling/Gymnastics program for youth ages 4-12 to be held the week before Christmas and the three days after New Years'. Ages 4-8 will have some use of gymnastics apparatus, while ages 9-12 will work entirely on floor exercises. The focus will be on developing new skills, while improving existing skills. more

Hilton to host memorial hockey alumni game
The Hilton Hockey Boosters will host the 2nd annual Rob Coppaway Alumni Game on Saturday, December 29 at Lakeshore Ice Arena. The game begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door and the cost is $2 for adults, $1 for students, those under 12 years of age will be admitted free. Donations are also welcome. more

Kewin, Snyder double winners
Kevin Kewin won the 200 meter freestyle and the 100 meter butterfly while Scott Snyder won the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter backstroke for Brockport in a 99-80 loss to Penfield in boy's swimming December 6. more

Logsdon leads Holley Hawks
Junior Lauren Logsdon scored 28 points and added six steals as the Holley Hawks defeated Kendall 57-52 in girl's basketball December 10. Logsdon's offensive output brought her to within fourteen points of becoming the all-time leading scorer in Hawks history, a record held for now by Jamie Bonner who graduated in 1994. more

Lynn Sorel had 15 kills while Kristi Rath and Danielle LeBeau combined for 45 digs as the Brockport Blue Devils defeated Gates Chili 25-30, 30-28, 30-22, 30-24, December 6. more
