County awarded watershed assistance grant
River Network, a Portland, Oregon-based national river and watershed conservation organization, has awarded the County a $15,000 Watershed Assistance Grant (WAG). The county accepted the grant on behalf of the Black Creek Watershed Coalition as a means to protect and restore their watershed. more

Empire State Building will be green for a reason
The Empire State Building will be lit green the week of January 22-27 during the March of Dimes' Birth Defects Prevention Month. Green symbolizes the food sources that are rich in folic acid, such as leafy vegetables, beans and citrus fruits. During January, the March of Dimes is reminding women they need at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily if they are of childbearing age to help reduce the chance of birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. more

The Irish Children's Program of Rochester seeks host families
The Irish Children's Program of Rochester will hold seven informational meetings throughout Monroe County for anyone interested in hosting a child from Northern Ireland during the summer of 2002. more

Hilton Fire Department elects their 2002 officers
On Thursday, December 6, the Hilton Fire Department held their yearly elections. The new Fire Chief (2C16) is Mike Lissow, an eighteen year veteran member of the fire department. He resides in the village of Hilton with his wife, Mary, and their four children Jacob, Rachel, Ali and Ben. more

Monroe County residents may drop off their Christmas trees at the following locations for recycling. more

Ogden holds swearing-in ceremony
Ogden officials will hold a swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, January 2, at 5:15 p.m. at the Ogden Community Center. more

Art students to exhibit portfolios Jan. 4 at Hilton High School
Hilton High School art students in teacher Christopher Potter's Portfolio class will be presenting their work on Friday, January 4, at 6:30 p.m. in Hilton High School Auditorium, 400 East Avenue, Hilton. The students are ad-vanced art students who have produced a collection of work which will be discussed by each student. more

Brockport receives transition grant for special education students
Brockport High School has received a $4,000 mini-grant from the Rochester Regional Transition Coordination Site that will be used to promote transition services for students with disabilities. more

Byron-Bergen student Australia bound
At least five students from the Byron-Bergen High School have been selected to participate in next summer's trip to Australia in the People to People Student Ambassadors program. All ambassadors must raise their own finances to pay for the trip and their spending money. more

Kendall students present play
about the learning standards
Kendall's Studio K drama club is helping their fellow students learn about the New York State Learning Standards now, so they can earn a good living later. "Learn to Earn" is a play written by James Morey of Wyoming, NY to help students understand the importance of the learning standards and how they relate to the expectations and demands of employers. more

Poet Todd Beers to hold writing workshops
at Hilton's Northwood Elementary School
Rochester poet Todd Beers will visit Hilton's Northwood Elementary School January 3-16, 2002 to present writer's workshops and poetry readings for children, according to Language Arts Teacher Janis Hyland. Beers' visit to Northwood is sponsored by Young Audiences of Rochester and Northwood's Volunteer Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization. more

Spencerport School District installs automated telephone attendant
Beginning Monday, January 7, the Spencerport Central School District will have a new automated telephone attendant. The automated attendant will assist those who don't know the phone number for the school or office they are trying to reach. more

Chili Senior Center programs
Champions on Ice - a trip to Blue Cross Arena on Friday, January 18 to see Champions on Ice featuring Dorothy Hamill, Nancy Kerrigan, Rudy Galindo and Victor Petrenko. Bus leaves the Chili Senior Center at 6:30 p.m. and returns at approximately 10 p.m. The cost is $36. For information, call 889-6185. more

Burgio scores five for Cadets
Junior Jim Burgio scored five goals and helped account for all seven Cadets' goals as Hilton defeated Spencerport 7-3 December 22 in high school hockey. The seven points in one game is the most for Hilton since Randy Coppaway had eight points in one game two seasons ago. more

Hilton Cheerleaders sweep Niagara Festival of Lights Tournament
The Hilton High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleading teams were top winners in the Annual Festival of Lights Cheerleading Competition held in Niagara Falls, Ontario this month. The Varsity Team placed first in the cheer routine scoring 95.5; first in the cheer dance scoring 96.5; and first place in the varsity division according to coach Laurie Miller, teacher at Hilton High School. more

Lifeguard test dates set
Qualifying procedures held for lifeguards in the Finger Lakes Region will be held January 5, at the Watkins Glen High School. more

Register for Chili Lions Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading
Prior participants in the Chili Lions Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading Program can register Friday, January 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chili Senior Center, 3235 Chili Avenue, Rochester. Open registration is scheduled for Saturday, January 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the same address. more

Saints second-Rangers fourth in relays
The Churchville-Chili Saints boys swimming team used five second place finishes to complete the 20th Annual Spencerport Holiday Swim Relays in second place behind first place Fairport. The Red Raiders have now won this event nineteen of the twenty times it has been held. more

Stulpin pin leads Rangers
Steve Stulpin pinned his man in 1:53 in the 152 lb. match to lead the Spencerport Rangers to a 35-9 high school wrestling victory over Brockport December 20. more
