For 19 years, Michael Mullen has been fulfilling a childhood dream. He joined the Hilton Fire Department Explorer Post in 1982 and served as chief in the post in 1985-86. He then went to Alfred College and earned a degree in building trades, plumbing and heating. However, his passion for firefighting brought him back to Hilton as a volunteer from 1988 to 1990. Mike then received a resident firefighting job in Avon, Colorado and worked there for three years. He had received his Certified First Responder card while in Hilton and became an Emergency Medical Technician during his years in Colorado. In 1993, Mike moved back to the area and received a part time EMT position with the Ridge Road Fire District. That led to a full time firefighter position in June 1995 where he has been working ever since. He has been an active member of the Hilton Fire Department since returning from Colorado and is qualified as an interior firefighter and a medic on the ambulance. He also served as trustee for the department from 1997-1999. Mike and his wife Katrina live in the village of Hilton. They have been married for four years, have a one year old daughter named Riley and have another baby due in February 2002.

His interest in firefighting started at a young age. Mullen says that he grew up around the fire service watching his grandfather, father, brother, uncles and cousins be firefighters. He continues to enjoy the job because it is always a challenge. "No two calls are ever the same," Mike says. "As the world changes, so does the job of a firefighter." Mike has seen many of these changes through the years and has taken numerous training classes to keep his knowledge up to date. Some of these classes include training on confined spaces, rope rescue, automobile extrication, hazardous materials and incident command. He is certified nationally as a Firefighter I and II, is an Ice Water Rescue Instructor, a CPR Instructor and an Automated External Defibrillator Instructor.

Over the years, Mullen has had many memorable calls, including delivering two babies, saving a patient with a defibrillator last year in Hilton and assisting with an Ice Water rescue in the Lakeshore Fire District this past spring. He received a Meritorious Service Award for the call in Lakeshore.
