Clarendon to host soapbox car race

The Town of Clarendon will host its third annual Soapbox Car Race on Saturday, June 1. Registration is open to anyone desiring to participate, and it not exclusive to the Clarendon community.

Divisions and age restrictions are: Division I - ages 8-10 years; Division II - ages 11-16 years; Division III heavyweight - ages 8-16 years; Division III handicapped - ages 8-16 years physically impaired; Adult Division - ages over 16 years.

This fun-filled event emphasizes family and community involvement from the building of the race car, to the double elimination soapbox car race. Each racer needs a sponsor to offset the cost of the $55 Derby Go-Kit Car Kit; the registration fee is $20. Registration forms and sponsor forms may be obtained by calling 637-6371 ext. 100 or by stopping at the Clarendon Town Hall, 16385 Church Street, Clarendon. The registration form and fee, and the sponsor form and fee must be returned by March 13, to the Clarendon Town Hall. The derby Go-Kit Car Kits will be available for pick up by the first of April.

Sponsorship of the Soapbox Car Race will create visibility for a business, and will help promote this event, according to race organizers.

Last year's race was very successful. Medallions were given to each of the participants and each registered driver received promotional products donated by various sponsors. Trophies were given for the first four places and savings bonds in the amounts of $300, $150 and $50 were given to the top three places in each division. The awards for this year will depend on the sponsors' generosity.
