Brockport seventh-graders Janis Massinger (left) and Kaitlyn Schicker hold the plaques and monetary awards they were presented by the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen's Association for the first-place essay they wrote together on fire prevention. Receiving a third-place award was fifth-grader Sebastian Zona from Brockport's Fred W. Hill School. This is the 35th year for the countywide essay contest. Shown with the students are (l-r) Ray Emma, past president William Nichols and second vice president Alan Way, all of the Monroe County Volunteer Fireman's Association. Also present were Deputy Chief Christian McCullough and Assistant Chief Mark Warner from the Brockport Fire Department. Janis and Kaitlyn are students at A.D. Oliver Middle School.
