Commander Finn Donaldson announced that Chili American Legion Post 1830 is joining thousands of other Legion Posts throughout America in making Blue Star Service Flags available to households who have a son, daughter, or spouse now serving on active duty with the armed forces of the United States.

The Blue Star Flag Program was started during the First World War in 1917 and reinstated during World War II to honor the men and women in our armed forces. It was a visible reminder of the patriotism of the person in the service of our nation, the sacrifice of the family and the pride and support of our citizens.

This year at the American Legion National Convention a resolution was passed to encourage families of members on active duty to show their patriotism and pride by placing these flags in their windows.

The American Legion celebrates February as "Americanism Month" because of the occurrence of Presidents Lincoln and Washington's birthdays, along with Presidents' Day. It is also the month of the start and end of Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Commander Donaldson and the members of Chili Post 1830, the Auxiliary and the Sons of The Legion have purchased a supply of flags for distribution to Chili households who have a family member on active duty with the armed forces of the United States.

Residents of the Town of Chili may contact Commander Finn Donaldson at 247-1467 or Adjutant Art Reimherr at 889-1232. During the month of February there will be no charge for these Blue Star Flags. Residents outside of the Town of Chili should contact their local American Legion Posts.
