Sweden appoints highway superintendent

A new highway superintendent has been appointed in the Town of Sweden.

During a special meeting February 19, Councilman Rob Carges proposed a resolution naming Frederick E. Perrine as the town's new highway superintendent. The motion was passed unanimously and Perrine will begin his duties with the town on March 11.

"The board has done due diligence in our search for a new superintendent," Carges said.

Perrine, who tendered his resignation as the Village of Brockport's highway superintendent at the February 18 meeting, will replace former Sweden Highway Superintendent Craig Smith.

Smith resigned January 25 following allegations of misappropriation of a 1984 Jeep that was owned by the town. The resignation was accepted and no further charges were filed following the return of the vehicle.

Following a 23-year career with Brockport, Perrine said the new position with Sweden would offer him a larger area to oversee. "This will be a new challenge with a bigger area to cover," Perrine said.

He said leaving a position he had occupied for 23 years weighed heavily on his mind but he looks forward to being involved in the projects Sweden is undertaking. "It will be tough to leave but I'm looking forward to the new experiences in Sweden," he said.

Perrine told Brockport officials he would make himself available if they need advice.

Mayor Josephine Matela and other village board members accepted his resignation, with regret. "Congratulations on your new position," Matela said. "We know you'll be involved in bigger projects and new challenges with the town."
