department moves to new facility

The Churchville-Chili Transportation Department will move into its new facility the week of February 19, February break week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the radio system, computers and phones will be moved from the old facility, attached to the high school, to the new building, located at the corner of Westside Drive and Fairbanks Road, according to district officials. Transportation Department workers will spend the rest of the week "organizing offices and checking computers, phones, security systems and fuel systems to make sure everything is in working order for Monday, February 25," when students return to school, says Linda Hafner, C-C's transportation director. Buses will also be moved to the new facility that week.

Work began on the new facility last June. It provides a larger space to service and store the district's nearly 90 buses. The facility also provides better working space for the district's six mechanics, approximately 100 drivers, and administrative support staff. There is also a fence around the buses to provide added security.

The old bus garage will become the new home of shipping and receiving for the district. The space vacated by the bus drivers and support staff will be renovated into improved vocal music for high school students and an expanded cafeteria.

The transportation facility is part of the district's $30.9 million building project approved by voters in January 2000. The project includes a new technology wing for junior and senior high school students. The 4,000 square foot Math/Science/Technology Center will house the nationally acclaimed pre-engineering program, Project Lead the Way, featuring high-tech robotics, computer-assisted manufacturing, and Rapid Prototype Design. The middle school library will be expanded and updated and the high school library will be renovated. The plan also includes the addition of four classrooms at Fairbanks Road Elementary School and seven classrooms and a new physical education teaching station at the Junior High School. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2003.
