Fees set for Community Center
Fees set for Community Center
Open house scheduled March 10

The phone has been ringing off the hook at the Sweden Community Center, Marleen Cain, deputy town clerk said. "We're booked right through until the end of March."

Cain has been helping run the newly opened center until a recreation director can be hired. She reported there were 36 participants signed up for a recent basketball clinic. "The clinic made $1,000 for the weekend," she said.

Six use permits have been issued for the facility and a basketball tournament, soccer clinics and space for violin and viola lessons have been reserved.

"The Buffalo Blizzard soccer teams also want to reserve the facility for practices for their teams," Cain said.

Sweden trustee Danielle Windus-Cook explained the fee schedule was $20 per hour for use of the rooms and $40 per hour for use of the gym. Gym usage also requires an additional $100 fee for special events. A set-up and clean up fee of $25 will also be assessed.

"We looked at fees from other areas and schools and we're on target with them," Deputy Supervisor Rob Carges said.

Clarkson and Brockport have said they will support the facility with a $10,000 commitment. Brockport's funds will come from taxes already assessed to residents, Supervisor Nat O. Lester III said.

"We've told the municipalities that if we get ownership of the building, they won't be responsible for repairs," Lester said. "We didn't think that would be fair to them since we would own the building."

Lester said whether Hamlin comes on board is another matter but with the support from the other towns, the nearly 40 year old tradition of cooperation with the communities would continue.

An open house is scheduled for March 10 at the former Golden Heights Christian Church facility.

The open house is being hosted from 1 to 4 p.m. and will feature official remarks, a recognition proclamation being presented to Brockport sports teams, entertainment from the Bud DeTar Band, refreshments and door prizes.

Cain said several individuals have requested information on helping out at the facility and she urged anyone interested in volunteering to contact the Town Hall.
