Spencerport approves capital project bids

The Spencerport School Board approved bids for the building of the new elementary school at its February 12 meeting. Rochester's Testa Construction won the general trade construction contract for the new elementary school. The board awarded five other contracts that night for structural steel, roofing, drywall/acoustical, case work and electrical for the new elementary school.

Bids for the rest of the district's capital project, including the renovations and additions to Cosgrove Middle School and Spencerport High School, will be opened February 28. The board is expected to award bids at its March 12 meeting.

The district expects to breakground in late March or early April. The project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2003. At that time, students will begin attending the new elementary school and all district sixth-graders will start attending Cosgrove Middle School, which now houses only seventh- and eighth-graders.

The project also includes an improved bus loop, parking and traffic flow at the high school and middle school; a new high school auditorium; a technology upgrade at the high school; a new middle school gymnasium and cafeteria; and athletic improvements such as multi-purpose field with an all-weather track on the main campus.

The capital project began in 1998 with a comprehensive planning team of 45 district and community leaders and parents. Voters approved the $46.9 million project in March 2000.
