Gately scores last eight in Cadet win

Mark Gately picked a good time to score his only points of the game—the fourth quarter—as seventh-seeded Hilton overcame an eight-point deficit to defeat tenth seeded Franklin 44-43 in sectional boys basketball action.

After trailing for most of the game, a pair of lay-ups sandwiched around four free throws by Gately along with Tyler Endres’ two lay-ups would prove just enough scoring for the Cadets in the fourth quarter. The final lay-up came with :32 left in regulation. With :12 left, a Franklin player was fouled, but missed the second free throw. The Quakers got the offensive rebound and had three shots in the last ten seconds--the last one going in after the horn to end the game.

"It’s nice to see the seniors win their last game at home," said Hilton head coach Ory Mee after the game. "We fought back and played through some mistakes, but 19 turnovers is a little too high. It was nice to see Gately step up at the end—I think we reacted well and used our basketball IQ."

Endres led Hilton with 10 points. Jarrod Rapke had 9 while Gately and Gareth Leonard chipped in eight points each. The Cadets advanced to the second round to face #2 seed Canandaigua who would end Hilton’s season with an 8-14 overall record.
