Bergen Cadette Girl Scout Troop 2205 donates toys
When Cadette Girl Scout Troop 2205 heard about a new church opening in Bergen, they wanted to do something to help. They heard that the new church had been meeting in a Day Care Center in Brockport but now was moving to Bergen and had no toys for the children. They decided to do something about that while fulfilling the requirement for Community Service for the Child Care Interest Project. more

Bergen election slate set
Residents in the village of Bergen will be asked to cast their ballot for the position of mayor and three trustee seats. James MacConnell and Thomas LeSage are vying for the mayoral position while Anna Marie Barclay, Virginia Adams, Robert Bausch, Rex Neal and James Howard are throwing their hats into the ring for the available trustee positions. more

Brockport taxpayers will see tax rate increase
Taxpayers will likely be faced with a larger tax bill this year once the budgeting process has been complete, Mayor Josephine Matela said. more

A sixth water district that would serve 72 homes is under consideration by Town of Clarendon officials. more

Cub Scouts honored at Blue and Gold Dinner
Cub Scout Pack 292, chartered by the Lions Club of Chili, held its Blue and Gold Dinner on Friday, February 8 at the Italian-American Community Center on Manitou Road in Gates. The Blue and Gold Dinner is an annual event honoring cub scouts who have achieved their next level of rank within the Cub Scout Organization. more

Height variance approved for milling towers in Churchville
The Village of Churchville Zoning Board of Appeals granted The Star of the West Milling Co. the necessary height variance to build eight, 110-foot grain silos, in a 4 to 1 vote March 13. more

Notes from Brockport and Sweden
The Brockport and Sweden community enjoyed Cynthia Howk's informative presentation on Brockport history and architecture at the February 7 meeting at the Morgan-Manning House. Howk is the research coordinator of Rochester's Landmark Society. Her wealth of knowledge and unique lecture skills made the evening truly memorable for the large audience. Everyone came away feeling fortunate indeed to live in our truly historic Erie Canal setting. more

Ogden compiles comprehensive plan update survey results
The purpose of the survey that was delivered to all Ogden recipients of the Suburban News in November 2001 was to provide town residents with an opportunity to have a voice in the future of their community and the Comprehensive Plan. more

Sanctions against Brockport trustee lifted
Sanctions against Brockport Village Trustee Peter DeToy have been lifted. Supreme Court Justice Harold Galloway ruled in favor of DeToy. more

Spring's sweet sap
Drought and the mild winter this year could have a big influence on maple syrup production underway in western New York. Local producers, including Maple Grove Farm in Clarendon, report heavy sap flow with high sugar content which could lead to a bumper crop of especially fine high grade syrup and granulated maple sugar. more

Sweden Community Center hosts grand opening
The spirit of volunteerism shone through every clean pane of glass, newly laid carpet, and the freshly painted walls as visitors were welcomed to the March 10 grand opening of the Sweden Community Center. More than 400 people attended the event. more

High winds cause more damage
Trees weren’t the only things to suffer in the March 10 wind storm with gusts over 75 mph. Along Lake Road in Hamlin, utility poles snapped at midpoint, causing more than a little stress on the attached wires. more

The Rochester Monroe County Youth Bureau is inviting young people, ages 13 to 20, to learn about the Youth Participation Project (YPP) by attending an Open House on Tuesday, March 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 50 West Main Street, Fourth Floor CityPlace. This event will offer an opportunity for youth to visit the Youth Bureau and learn more about this youth led group that empowers young people to become leaders. more

In the spirit of the popular Iron Chef TV program, Monroe Community College will host the second annual MCC Culinary Arts Competition, Friday, March 22, in Reflections Restaurant at the Brighton Campus, 1000 East Henrietta Road, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. more

GCC offers grant writing workshops
Genesee Community College will offer Introduction to Grant Writing, a day-long workshop on the art and technique of grant funding, and Grant Writing Clinic, a follow-up course that will assist in refining and improving writing, formatting, and research techniques. more

GCC posts record enrollment for 2000-2001
Final enrollment figures are in for the 2000-2001 academic year, and they confirm what everyone has been expecting, President Stuart Steiner told the Board of Trustees last week - Genesee saw the largest enrollment in its history for the year ending in August 2001. more

Hilton to hold Kindergarten registration
The Hilton Central School District will hold kindergarten registration. Children whose fifth birthday falls on or before December 1, 2002 are eligible to attend kindergarten starting in September. more

Hilton School District's Spring Story Festival March 21
The 12th Annual Hilton Spring Story Festival will be held Thursday, March 21, at the Village Elementary School, 100 School Lane, Hilton, featuring internationally-known storyteller and author, Rafe Martin and illustrator Michael Dooling. The 'family night' atmosphere of the Spring Story Festival is especially appealing to parents and elementary-age children, but all are welcome, according to festival organizers. Admission is $1 per person. more

Kendall High School presents "The Music Man"

Kendall schools hold kindergarten registration March 18
Registration for children in the Kendall Central School District starting kindergarten next year will be Monday, March 18 in the Kendall Elementary School cafeteria from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Children do not need to attend the registration. more

Blue Devils lose in semi's
For the first time in the team's history, the Brockport Blue Devils ice hockey team advanced to the state semi-finals, but the good news would end there. Playing Williamsville North, who lost in the state final one year ago, Brockport gave up four first period goals and could not recover losing 8-0. more

Bright Raven Gymnasts win at Niagara Cup
Bright Raven Gymnastics attended the 2002 Niagara Cup at the University of Buffalo Alumni Arena March 8-10. Many of the Bright Raven gymnasts earned top honors. more
