Ogden compiles comprehensive
plan update survey results

The purpose of the survey that was delivered to all Ogden recipients of the Suburban News in November 2001 was to provide town residents with an opportunity to have a voice in the future of their community and the Comprehensive Plan. There were 467 residents who responded, with 70 percent of the responses coming from the town and 30 percent coming from the village. From these, 75 percent of the residents have lived in Ogden for more than 10 years, and plan on continuing to live here for more than 10 additional years. 71 percent of those responded were between the ages of 36 and 65.

There was an overwhelming response indicating that Ogden residents want to preserve the existing rural character of the town. There were many comments regarding the fact that "this is why we moved to Ogden," as well as, "why we are staying." The emphasis was on the maintenance of open space, agricultural lands and the natural features of the town. In answer to the question of priority, the following are listed in order of preference: Maintaining Rural Character, Provide Guidelines, Preserve Natural Features, Preserve Farmlands, Preserve Woodlands, Balance Development, Maintain Village Vitality, Concentrate Development, Increase Parks, and Encourage Commercial Development.

More than 60 percent of the responses indicated a willingness to spend additional tax dollars on Protecting Natural Features, Preserving Agricultural Activities and Acquiring Park Land.

According to Supervisor Gay Lenhard, the Comprehensive Plan Committee will develop guidelines to insure that the spirit of the results of this survey is implemented. When this is completed, Ogden residents will be invited to a public hearing where additional input will be encouraged regarding the recommended Ogden Comprehensive Plan.
