Measure would strengthen Megan's Law

Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester, Chili, Wheatland) said the Assembly passed legislation she sponsored designed to strengthen the state's sex offender registry.

"We now have taken the steps to make sure the law better protects our communities from sexual predators," John said.

Assemblymember John's measure would require sex offenders registered in other states to register in New York if they intend to work or attend school here. In addition, the measure would require sex offenders to notify the registry if they attend or work for any higher educational institution in New York State - and require law enforcement to notify appropriate local authorities if a registered sex offender moves into the community.

"Strengthening Megan's Law is vital to helping protect our families - especially children - from sex offenders," John concluded.
