Nesbitt receives committee assignments

New York state Assemblyman Charles Nesbitt (R,C-Albion) was re-appointed by New York State Assembly Republican Leader John J. Faso (R-Kinderhook) to serve on two Assembly committees.

Nesbitt was re-appointed to serve on the Veterans' Affairs Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. He was also re-appointed to serve as the Deputy Assembly Republican Leader, one of the most prestigious and powerful leadership positions within the Assembly Republican Conference.

The Veterans' Affairs Committee considers legislation of interest to New York's nearly 1.5 million resident veterans over a broad spectrum of the state's consolidated laws, but with special emphasis on the Civil Service Law, Military Law, Real Property Tax Law, and the Vehicle and Traffic Safety Law. The committee's specific issue responsibilities include: benefits and recognition of New York's veteran population, veterans' real property tax exemption programs, public and private sector employment incentives, and federal veterans' issues such as administration of Veterans Administration hospitals, establishment of veterans' nursing homes and health and disability benefits.

The Veterans' Affairs Committee considers approximately 100 bills during the regular legislative session. The New York State Department of Veterans' Affairs is the primary state agency responsible for veterans issues, along with policy oversight and implementation.

The Assembly Ways and Means Committee's responsibilities include consideration of all legislative priorities pertaining to finances, taxation, in addition to renewing, analyzing and formulating budgetary proposals.

The Deputy Assembly Republican Leader helps coordinate legislative and communications strategy for the Assembly Republican Conference and helps oversee outreach and coalition development initiatives.
