films on international concerns

The denial of freedom around the globe will be raised in programs and film screenings organized by the University of Rochester chapter of Amnesty International during Human Rights Week April 21-26. All events are free and open to the public.

A forum on censorship with four members of the college faculty will begin the series of events at 2 p.m. Monday, April 22, in the Gowen Room of Wilson Commons.

A screening of the film Incident at Oglala: The Leonard Peltier Story is scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in Dewey Hall, room 2-162. The documentary about the violent events in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota will be followed by a discussion led by Mary Young, professor emerita of history.

On Thursday, April 25, organizers have planned a discussion titled "Wicked Western Values?" on the myths and realities of cultural deconstruction at 7:30 p.m. in the Gowen Room. Afterward, guitarist David Rovics will sing at 9:15 p.m. in the Common Ground at Wilson Commons.

The final day of events on Friday, April 26, includes a workshop on nonviolent protests at 1 p.m. in Havens Lounge of Wilson Commons, and a 7 p.m. film in Hubbell Auditorium. South African novelist J. M. Coetzee, a two-time winner of Britain's prestigious Booker Prize, is included in Amnesty's schedule for Human Rights Week.
