Local teen wins 4-H horse contest

The annual Region 2, Finger Lakes area 4-H Horse Communications Contests were held March 23 at the NYS Agriculture Experiment Station in Geneva.

The Communications Contests provide 4-H members an opportunity to have their demonstrations and public presentations evaluated on a seven county regional level and vie for an opportunity to present in the state contests.

Nicole Gavigan, daughter of Christopher and Mary Gavigan of Hilton, Monroe County, placed first in the senior (14 years and older) public presentation contest which consisted of a twelve minute memorized program. Nicole, an honors student, is a freshman at Hilton Hilton School. She has been interested in horses since she was three years old. Due to this deepening interest, their neighbor, Faye Webster, occasionally allowed three year old Nicole to ride on his lap as he exercised and practiced his sulky horses. Nicole began riding lessons at four years of age.
