Cropwalkers work to stop hunger

On Sunday, May 5, at 1 p.m. a group of people will depart from the Spencerport United Methodist Church to walk the canal path to Adams Basin and back. This is not just an afternoon stroll, these walkers have a mission: to fight world hunger.

For more than 30 years, the Crop Walk sponsored by Church World Services, has been raising money to supply housing, food, emergency supplies, fishing nets, clean water and many other necessities to poverty stricken areas throughout the United States and in more than 80 countries. During the hour it will take to walk the canal path, people all over the world will be walking to get water, to work in the fields, and to collect firewood. Seven local churches are supporting walkers who will be a part of the 2.3 million people in 2,000 towns and cities across the U.S. taking part in community Crop Walks this year. A portion of the money earned will return to Spencerport to be used for the area foodshelf.

To walk, help, or sponsor a walker, call Bev Compertore at 594-4458, or put on your walking shoes and sign in at the registration table in front of 32 Amity Street (the red brick church) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
