EMS Week, the annual national event that recognizes the dedication and hard work of everyone working in emergency medical services, will take place May 19-25. The theme for this year, "EMS: Help is a Heartbeat Away," emphasizes the responsiveness of emergency medical services around the country. It also addresses the commitment and dedication of the 750,000 EMS providers who serve their communities. more

The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley, Inc. (GSGV) honored outstanding volunteers at its Eleventh Annual Recognition Gala on April 25 at Waver's Party House, Paul Road, Rochester. more

Hamlin discusses possible new water district
Public water may be coming to the southwest section of Hamlin by this time next year. The town board answered questions and listened to concerns, Monday evening, as about 80 residents tried to digest the news that would affect 104 homes on Hamlin’s southwest side including residents on Drake Road and Roosevelt Highway all the way to Kendall Mills. more

Hilton School District Board of Education
adopts $46.2 million budget proposal
On April 26, the Hilton School District Board of Education voted to send to the voters a $46.2 million budget proposal for the 2002-03 school year. The budget represents an overall dollar-to-dollar increase of 1.14 percent over last year's budget, but tax rate estimates are projected to be about 6.59 percent across all four district towns: Parma, Greece, Clarkson and Hamlin. more

New sign code debated at public hearing
A real sign of the times in Hamlin may be that signs will have new rules to follow. In the second half of a public hearing double header Monday, April 29, the town board listened as local residents gave their thoughts on proposed modifications to codes regarding signage. more

No tax rate increase in Holley
Tax rates will remain the same for Village of Holley residents under the 2002-2003 budget that was adopted April 16. more

Parkminster Preschool director
and teacher retires after 33 years

Parkminster Preschool is losing a long time friend and advocate for the rights of the young child. Susan Fuhrman is retiring after 33 years as a teacher and director. There will be an Open House at the preschool from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 for parents, students, teachers or aides who have been there since the fall of 1969. more

Spencerport holds budget hearing and candidate night
Spencerport residents can attend the Budget Hearing and Candidate Information Night Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. in the Board of the Education Conference Room at the Spencerport Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue. In addition to a presentation explaining the proposed 2002-2003 school budget, board candidates will speak about their views and will answer questions. more

The Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Museum is delaying its 2002 season opening to the general public until on or after July 15. All special tours by appointment are suspended until this date as well. more

Hubbard Springs Garden Club to do plantings at town complexes
The Town of Chili and Hubbard Springs Garden Club are looking for volunteers to help with spring planting at each of the town complexes. more

Memorial Day Parade planned in Spencerport
Ferris Goodridge Post 330 of the American Legion will be sponsoring the annual Memorial Day Parade, in the village of Spencerport on May 27. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. sharp. Marching units will gather at 8:30 a.m. on West Avenue across from Walker Bros. Funeral Home. more

Miles for Meals Walkathon steps off June 1
The Fifth Annual Miles for Meals Walkathon will be hosted by the Monroe County Office for the Aging at Highland Park on Saturday, June 1. This intergenerational event encourages people of all ages to walk together to raise money for senior meal programs in Monroe County. more

New playground equipment to be dedicated

Ogden Farmers' Library makes library catalog changes
Beginning May 9, the computer catalog software at the Ogden Farmers' Library will change from Everybody's Catalog to LibraWeb. Users will be pleased with the expanded capabilities available through the LibraWeb product, which include being able to renew your own materials, place holds on multiple items at once, and remove holds from your library account, according to library staff. more

Postal cancellation marks Chili landmark
The North Chili Post Office will offer a special cancellation starting on Saturday, May 11 to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Stuart Road Bridge in Chili. The cancellation, which will be available for a period of 30 days, shows a drawing of the bridge made by Christine Wilcox, granddaughter of Bill and Bernice Wilcox of Chili Mills. more

A biography project bridges the generation gap
The Biographer's Club at the Brockport Hill Elementary School brought together fourth- and fifth-grade writers to work on a special project with senior citizens at the Sweden Senior Center. After six months of hard work, they recently presented the finished product to the seniors, a 70-page book of biographies. more

Sixteen Brockport Central School District student musicians participated in the Monroe County School Music Association's All County Jazz Music Festival held at the Gates Chili Middle School last month. more

The 15th annual Jump Role for Heart event held April 24 at the Taylor Elementary School in Spencerport. According to originator and coordinator Karen Gaffner, a gym teacher, the goal was to raise $15,000; and exceed the expectations by raising about $15,300. more

These three were winners of the Brockport Underground Racquetball League playoffs. The league is open to anyone, male or female of any age. more

FLCC men and women woodsmen retain crown
Twenty eight teams representing nine colleges from North Eastern United States and Canada competed for the overall championship trophy by completing nineteen events at the 56th Annual Spring Woodmen's Meet held this year at Unity College in Maine. The six person men's and women's teams from FLCC earned their 14th title at the Unity Meet. more

Kristina Schweikert went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and three runs batted in as Spencerport defeated Penfield 9-4 in high school varsity softball April 24. more
