to apartment building fire call

Spencerport Volunteer Firemen were called to a fire in a multiple occupancy structure at 26 Church Street, in the village of Spencerport on May 11 at 3:45 p.m. According to fire department Public Information Officer Lieutenant Brian Krywy, a female occupant of an upstairs apartment smelled and saw smoke, went to investigate the origin of smoke and heard the smoke detector going off. So, immediately left the building to call 911 from a business across the street.

While making the call, a Spencerport firefighter and off duty Rochester Firefighter Rich McQuilkin heard her state there was a fire and went across the street to evacuate the building.

Within seconds of the alarm, firefighter Tom Clark assisted firefighter McQuilkin with going room to room and assisted evacuating an elderly couple out of their apartment as first arriving units were pulling up.

Krywy said the fire was placed under control in 10 minutes and fire damage was contained to room of origin. No injuries were reported. All residents were allowed back into their apartments about an hour later, except for the apartment that had the fire, which is uninhabitable due to fire, smoke and heat damage. The cause of fire is under investigation.
