On Tuesday, May 21, Curt Lawall, Assistant Manager of the Brockport Wal-Mart, recognized Sara Doty as the area Teacher of the Year. Wal-Mart sponsored this contest from March 11 through April 14. Ballots and flyers were distributed to local school districts as well as an in-store ballot nomination process. A committee from Wal-Mart read the ballots and chose a winner based on the comments. Doty's colleagues and the children of Brockport Child Care Center, attended the short ceremony. Wal-Mart presented a $500 check to Brockport Child Care Center.

Mary Montgomery, Executive Director of Brockport Child Care Center, said, "Sara has been a preschool teacher at Brockport Child Care Center since 1995. I am pleased that Sara was selected Teacher of the Year but I am not surprised. She is an excellent teacher."

Curt Lawall read some of the comments from the ballots: "This teacher goes out of her way to bring her lesson plans to life. She will take the children on field trips; bring supplies from home to make her children's learning experience the most rewarding. This teacher is warm, caring and understanding of her preschooler's needs. I wish she could move along up in the grades with my child."

The Teacher of the Year project is part of Good Works Program of Wal-Mart. They have distributed over 196 million dollars to not-for-profit organizations; 1.7 million has been awarded to over 3,000 schools for the Teacher of the Year Program. Sara Doty is eligible to enter the state and national Teacher of the Year competition. The state winner receives $5,000 for the school and $10,000 is awarded to the school of the national winner.
