Jeff Voorheis graduated cum laude from Ithaca College May 18, 2002. He received his bachelor of science degree in sports management. He did his internship at Cornell University in the athletic department and will be working for the PGA in Portland, Oregon for seven months. Voorheis graduated from Churchville-Chili in 1998 and is the son of Deb and Brian Voorheis of Ogden.


Rebecca Houghton has been inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an education honor society, and for the second year she was honored with a prize from Phi Beta Kappa for being a top student at Elmira College. Houghton has just returned from five weeks in Glasgow, Scotland where she had the chance to student teach. She is a 1999 graduate of Hilton High School and daughter of Randall and Lory Houghton.


Elizabeth H. Brown, a Marietta College senior from Spencerport, was awarded the William L. Buelow Juried Prize in recognition of her achievements in the study of piano performance at the college. The prize, established last year in honor of retiring professor of music William L. Buelow, was credited to Brown's tuition during this semester. Brown performed a musical selection from Tenderland by Aaron Copland during the recent 2002 Spring Honors Convocation at the College. Brown, the daughter of Donna and Steven Brown of Spencerport, will graduate this spring with dual majors in music and radio/TV.


Hilton High senior Eric Steiner of Hilton has been selected this year's recipient of the George H. Scheible Memorial Printing Award at Hilton High. He was presented with a $250 honorarium and an engraved plaque by the Flower City Printing Company, sponsor of the annual award.

Steiner was recognized for his creativity in the school's printing curriculum and for his leadership traits. In addition, he won fourth place in the Gutenberg competition, a nationwide program that recognizes outstanding printing students. The Hilton resident was elected to the National Honor Society in his junior year and made the school's highest honor roll, The Academic Merit. A varsity hockey and football player, Steiner plans to enroll in RIT's School of Printing and Management.


Jason D. Hooker, son of Marilyn Hooker from Spencerport, graduated from Paul Smith's College, May 5.

Hooker majored in Paul Smith's Forest Recreation program.


Andrea Ferro, of Lakeshore Drive, Hilton, is among the more than 900 graduates of Providence College who received undergraduate degrees on Sunday, May 19, during the college's 84th Commencement Exercises. Ferro was awarded a bachelor of science degree in marketing (cum laude).


Greig W. Mitchell has been named SUNY College at Brockport Vice President for Administration and Finance. He will assume his duties June 24.

Mitchell previously served as vice chancellor for finance and administration for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, where he was chief financial, facilities, and public safety officer for the 14 universities making up the Pennsylvania system. Mitchell held that position since 1997 and oversaw a budget of $1.4 billion.

From 1985 to 1997, Mitchell was vice president for administration and finance for Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.

Mitchell assumes the vice president's position from Dr. Edward Kumar, who retired after a 34-year career at SUNY Brockport.


Local teachers recognized by the Warner School for Excellence in High School Teaching at the University of Rochester include:

Jerry Greenlee, of Spencerport, who teaches chemistry and physics at Kendall Central High School.

Alpa Khandhar, of Spencerport, who teaches chemistry at Hilton High School.

Cara Montrois, of Spencerport, who teaches social studies at Wheatland-Chili Junior-Senior High School.

Dean J. Myslivecek, of North Chili, who teaches chemistry at Gates Chili High School.

Sean Bryant, of Spencerport, who teaches English at Elba Junior-Senior High School.

Dave Nieman, of Hilton, who teaches physical education at Greece Olympia High School.


Local teachers recognized by the Warner School for Excellence in High School Teaching at the University of Rochester include:

Donald Borland, of Bergen, who teaches biological sciences at Eastridge High School.

Diana Hanley, of Hamlin, who teaches mathematics at Spencerport High School.

Jayne Jeffords, of Byron, who teaches special education at Oakfield-Alabama Central School.


Melissa Shone, daughter of John and Karen Shone of Hilton, has earned her associate's degree in veterinary technology at Medaille College in Buffalo. She has accepted a position at Laurelton Animal Hospital.


Marine Corps Cpl. Gregory J. Baronas, a 1996 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, participated in exercise Sea Soldier '02 while assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), home based at Camp Pendleton, California.

Marines from Baronas' unit honed their skills during the 12-day live-fire training exercise with soldiers from the Western Frontier Regiment of the Royal Army of Oman. Marines employed medium and heavy machine guns, grenades, mortars, pyrotechnics, demolitions and shoulder-fired anti-tank munitions.


Marine Corps Pvt. Thomas J. Entress, Jr., son of Darlene Morachino of Rochester, and Thomas J. Entress, Sr. of Rochester, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.

Entress successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

Entress is a 2001 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School.


Marine Corps Pvt. Justin M. Hemry, son of Suzette M. Dumais of Newfane and Herbert Hemry, Jr. of Bergen, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.

Hemry successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

Hemry is a 1999 graduate of Byron-Bergen Central High School.


Mark J. Rea has been selected for promotion to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. In addition, he has been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal. The medal is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who distinguish themselves by either outstanding achievement or meritorious service to the United States in noncombat situations.

Rea is a flight commander assigned to the 36th Electronic Warfare Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, Valparaiso, Florida.

He is the son of Mary and Joseph W. Rea of Rochester. His wife, Cara, is the daughter of Richard A. and Joyce C. Mason of Tucson, Arizona.

The major is a 1982 graduate of Gates Chili High School, Rochester, and received a bachelor's degree in 1986 from Clarkson University, Potsdam, New York.
