Churchville-Chili juniors to attend Empire Girls State sessions

Two Churchville-Chili Juniors representing two units from Monroe County of the American Legion Auxiliary, will attend the Empire Girls State program the week of June 29 through July 6 at Union College in Schenectady. Representing Harvey C. Noone Unit #954, Churchville, is Jamie L. Ponicson, of King Road, daughter of James Ponicson and Andrea Smith.

She is in Leo Club, Mock Trial Team, Youth in Government and Foreign Language Club. Next year she will be part of New Visions. Ponicson is in the law explorers program, the Leo Club, participates in community activities and she plans to have an internship.

Nicole Stich, of Churchville, daughter of Bernie and Romina Stich, will represent the Robertshaw Unit #100, Rochester. Nicole is in the band, choir, show choir, Foreign Language Society and National Honor Society. She does volunteer work at Springdale Farm and enjoys singing, dancing, acting and customizing clothing.

The young women will be among the 360 from across the state participating in the program. The Auxiliary trains youth about the basic ideals and principles of government. The Auxiliary teaches the women to understand, comprehend and appreciate their roles as citizens.

Citizens will learn about government, conduct campaigns, debate and write legislation. Mock sessions of city, county and state levels will be held and they form two political parties, elect their own officials as well as a Governor and Lt. Governor, as part of the program.
