Emily C. Becker, daughter of John and Wendy Becker of Kendall, has graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a bachelor's degree in education and mathematics. She has accepted a position with the Lyons Central School in Wayne County as an 8th grade math instructor.


Andrew Meyers, son of Gregg and Renee Meyers, Churchville, is named to the dean's list for the second semester of the 2001-02 school year at Hope College, Holland, Michigan. To be named to the dean's list a student must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.


Twenty-six student pianists from the studio of Barbara Woods in Spencerport performed in the New York Federation of Music Clubs Festival in February. All students earned superior ratings and will receive national honor certificates. The students are Alison MacKenzie, Nathan Wolski, Kyra Tobin, Nathaniel Heale, Melissa Heale, Laura Clemm, Beth Keegan, Tessa Fox, Kristen McCannon, Vy Dinh, Korin Diedrick, Steven Burek, Younghee Cho, Brian Loggi, Alexandria Townsend, Sabrina Agro, Abby Blakely, Ben Blakely, Andrew Callan, Jennifer Smith, Marissa Wimer, Katherine Wimer, Jennifer Trenton, Alexandra Keery, Nicole Townsend and Shauna Brongo.

Gold Cup trophies for earning three years of superior ratings will be awarded to Abby Blakely, Ben Blakely, Andrew Callan, Laura Clemm and Jennifer Smith; for six years of superior ratings to Tessa Fox, Brian Loggi and Kristen McCannon; for nine years for superior ratings to Sabrino Agro, Korin Diedrick and Kyra Tobin. Five students performed in the District Seven Trophy Festival and earned the Noteworthy Achievers Trophy. They are Stacey Baumler, Justine Locke, Ben Heale, Meghan Shewmann and Megan Barrell.


Hartwick College junior Susan J. Pelo, of Churchville, daughter of Edward A. Pelo and Carol Marie M. Pelo, has been awarded the Barbara F. and Philip S. Wilder, Jr. Hartwick Citizen Award at Hartwick College.

The Barbara F. and Philip S. Wilder, Jr. Hartwick Citizen Award is selected by the professional staff in the Office of Student Life. The recipient of this award is a junior student whose career at Hartwick College has exemplified outstanding leadership, campus citizenship, and strong academic performance.

Pelo is majoring in political science. At Hartwick, she has participated in women's varsity swimming and diving, Student Senate, Student Union, Big Brother/Big Sister Program, Champs, and Alpha Omicron Pi.


Colleen Fenity, the daughter of Mary and Lawrence Fenity of Maplewood Avenue in Spencerport, received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamilton College in Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 26.

Fenity was an English and dance major at Hamilton and graduated magna cum laude with departmental honors in English and dance.


Sarah "JJ" Begley of North Chili, has been recognized for her achievement as a National Leadership and Service Award winner. The Churchville-Chili Jr. High School student's name will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which is published nationally.

Begley is the daughter of Bob and Gail Begley of North Chili.


Richard Albano, of Spencerport, played on the Men's Volleyball team for Springfield College. Albano is a freshman history major. This season, the Pride captured its second consecutive Division III Volleyball Championship defeating La Verne (Calif.), 3-2, on April 23. The Pride, which now has three national titles to its name, wrapped up the 2001-2002 campaign with a 20-9 mark.


Kimberly Mackin, 17, has completed her first year at Clemson University She was able to accomplish this feat by graduating a year in advance from Brockport High School.

She is the daughter of Linda and Tom Mackin of Brockport.


Niagara University held its undergraduate commencement ceremonies May 19 at the Niagara Falls Convention and Civic Center.

Two Spencerport residents were among the graduates. They are: Ryanne Fullerton and Thomas Plucknette.


Karl A. Gnann, of Holley, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2002 semester at Alfred University. He is a senior in the NYS College of Ceramics. Gnann is a ceramic engineering major at Alfred University.

A graduate of Holley High School, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald P. Gnann of Holley.


Cindy J. De Felice, of Bergen, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2002 semester at Alfred University. She is a senior in the NYS College of Ceramics. Students must earn at least a 3.3 grade point average to qualify for dean's list. De Felice is an art and design major at Alfred University.

A graduate of Byron-Bergen High School, De Felice is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion P. De Felice of Bergen.


Suzanne Jane Heseltine Rigg, F.N. P., graduated from SUNY Stony Brook with a master of science degree in nursing, specializing in family medicine.

She has a position in a private practice in Easthampton, Long Island, NY. The 1982 graduate of Brockport High School, she resides in Sag Harbor, NY with her husband, Edward, and their Yellow Labrador Mags.

She is the daughter of Lilian and Maurice Rigg of Clarkson Parma Town Line Road, Brockport.


Jessica E. Underwood, of Clarkson Hamlin Town Line Road, Hamlin, was among the 429 students who received a degree at St. Lawrence University's Commencement ceremony, held May 19 on campus in Canton.

Underwood graduated from Brockport High School and received a degree (cum laude) in psychology and Spanish at St. Lawrence.


Andrea Palinski, the daughter of Angela and Gregg Palinski of Nichols Street in Spencerport, received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamilton College in commencement exercises on Sunday, May 26.

Palinski was a biology major at Hamilton.


Heather Smith, daughter of Stan and Debra Smith of Churchville, has been selected for inclusion in the 2001-2002 edition of "Who's Who Among American High School Students." This is the second consecutive year that the 2002 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School has been an honoree in the nationally recognized publication and awards program.


Abbey Perkins, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Perkins of Stony Point Road in Spencerport, received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamilton College in commencement exercises on Sunday, May 26.

Perkins was an American studies major at Hamilton and graduated magna cum laude with departmental honors in American studies.


Rick Warrington, son of Jean Warrington, Highview Terrace, Ogden, has been named to the spring 2002 dean's list at St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

Warrington, a senior, is a computer science major.


Stuart Chait, Jr., has graduated from the College of Communications at Boston University with a bachelor of science degree in film, with a minor in English. He was also selected as one of the top screenwriters of his class, and has accepted a scholarship for graduate studies in creative writing at Boston University.

He is the son of Stu and Cindy Chait of North Chili, and is a 1998 graduate of Aquinas Institute.


Christine Michelle McGovern, daughter of Mike and Jayne McGovern of Windmill Trail, Ogden, has been named to the spring 2002 dean's list at St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

McGovern, a freshman, is a psychology/pre-med major and a graduate of Churchville-Chili High School class of 2001.

To be eligible for the dean's list at St. John Fisher College, a student must have attained at least a 3.3 grade-point average for the semester.


Margaret A. "Peg" Swingle, a business education teacher at Greece Athena High School, was recognized as one of three distinguished teachers at this year's awards for excellence in high school teaching from the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester.

Swingle, a 30-year-plus veteran teacher, has developed a curriculum that is noteworthy for its inclusion of students with disabilities. She continuously innovates, advances her own learning, and prepares her students for life in a global, information-based society. Testimonials from many former students and parents document her lasting influence on those whose lives she has touched.

A resident of Spencerport, she was one of 69 secondary school teachers from across Western New York who attended the recognition dinner and ceremony on May 8 at the Memorial Art Gallery. Teachers from Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Genesee, and Wayne counties were selected by their schools for exceptional work.


The following Lakeside Hospital nurses have completed degrees.

Delia Bove, program coordinator for the Family Wellness Center, has graduated from GCC as a graduate nurse and has also received the General Excellence in Nursing Award from GCC. Bove is a resident of Holley.

Amy Fletcher, RN, BSN, CEN, nurse manager of Critical Care, has graduated from SUNY Brockport with her BSN degree. Fletcher is a resident of Caledonia.

Cynthia J. Rombaut, RN, BSN, director of Occupational Health Services, has graduated from the SUNY Brockport Nurse Practitioner program. Rombaut resides in Brockport.

Stephanie Young, RN, ICU Registered Nurse, also graduated as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner from Nazareth College. Young is a resident of Holley.


Emily Sarazyn of North Chili, a senior majoring in writing, has been named to the dean's list for the spring of 2002 at Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Dean's list status is awarded to students who earn a 3.6 grade point average or better.

Her parents are Thomas and Gwen Sarazyn.


Loraleigh Roller, daughter of Ann and Brian Roller, Brockport, has been promoted to the rank of Cadet First Class at the United States Coast Guard Academy. A senior, she is a business management and computer science major and serves on the Coast Guard Academy's Softball Team.

Roller is a multiple Gold, Blue and Silver Star medal winner (for academics, physical fitness and military). She has been appointed to the Board of Trustees, is on the dean's list and has received the National Defense Service Medal.

She has been assigned for the ten summer weeks in San Pedro, California aboard the William C. Cobb, a 175 foot Coastal Buoy Tender.


Sarla Mael, daughter of Lynn and Candi Mael of Kendall, has been named to the dean's list for the 2002 spring semester at the State University of New York at Oswego.

In the fall, Mael will be entering her senior year where she is majoring in elementary education with a minor in coaching.

She is also a member of the Oswego Lakers Women's soccer team.


Emma Carpenter, Katherine Drake, Katie Frank, Shelby Lind, and Traci Westcott were honored on May 7 for earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest award attainable by Junior Girl Scouts. The girls from Troop 847 came up with the idea to help the Brockport Food Shelf. After September 11, all five girls worked to restock bare food shelves by advertising the need and making a variety of patriotic pins and accessories to offer for donations. The girls collected food, toiletries, paper goods, and cash on two different weekends at Ryan's Big M market. Everyone worked hard and felt good about their service to the community.


Stephanie Forest, of Lake Avenue, Hilton, received a master of social work degree from the College of Human Services and Health Professions at Syracuse University in ceremonies May 12.


The following students graduated during St. Bonaventure University's 142nd Commencement Exercises, held Sunday, May 12.

Lindsay A. Scheg, an English major, education minor, cum laude. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel E. Scheg of Hilton.

Megan J. Ryan, an education major, cum laude. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton J. Ryan of Rochester.

Holly C. Maar, an education major, magna cum laude. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald C. Maar of Brockport.

Shannon J. Luce, an education major, cum laude. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl J. Luce, Jr. of Brockport.

Heather L. Hossenlopp, an education major. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hossenlopp of Spencerport.

Lucas F. Fink, a political science major and biology minor, cum laude. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary C. Fink of Bergen.

Amanda Doern, an education major. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kurt Doern of Rochester.
