Chemistry students perform demonstrations for Hilton elementary students

Hilton High School Advanced Placement Chemistry students in teacher Alpa Khandhar's class were ready with the flasks, liquid nitrogen and reagents to perform demonstrations involved in chemical reactions at Hilton's Northwood Elementary School recently. From left are Kevin Lasota, Brett Welcher and Mike Brown demonstrating the "non-burning dollar." "At the end of each year, the AP Chemistry students do these demonstrations for fourth graders in the district," Khandhar said. "It was started ten years ago and has become an excellent experience for high school students to play the role of the teacher - they do an outstanding job. In addition to demonstrating colorful and sparkling experiments, the students teach safety and the science behind the experiment. Our hope is that the elementary students will be inspired to continue with science throughout their school years." An outstanding teacher herself, Mrs. Khandhar received University of Rochester Secondary Excellence in Teaching Award this year, nominated by members of the National Honor Society.
