Brockport High School junior Savannah Richards has been named a finalist for the Rochester- Monroe County Youth Bureau's 2002 Young Citizen of the Year honor for the 15 to 21 year old level.

To be selected as a finalist, students must demonstrate values that represent the full meaning of a free and democratic society; be committed to volunteer and community service; set a positive example for their peers; and display leadership in school.

Savannah was nominated by Steve Appleton, director of Generation Cool, which provides interactive and intergenerational events focused on education, the arts and cultural diversity. "Savannah is a prolific activist for change; she is outspoken, conscientious and driven to build 'unity in the community,' " said Appleton. "Her determination is backed up by a great deal of energy, initiative and self-styled action."

The winner of the Young Citizen of the Year Award will be announced by the Honorable Dennis Pelletier, president of the Monroe County Legislature, at its regular meeting on June 11.
