Summer reading program helps mark library's 50th

The Newman Riga Library celebrates its 50th anniversary with a summer reading program and activities. "Escape into Books" is the theme for the preschool, 6-12 year old and Young Adult programs which begin July 8 and ends August 8.

The independent preschool program requires a log sheet to be picked up and titles of books read to the preschooler listed on the sheet. The main program, for the 6-12 year-old, is a board game which is played on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. The participant rolls die and moves a game piece on the board to determine which type of book must be read to proceed the next time he or she plays the game encountering prizes along the way. The participants in the Young Adult Program pick up a game sheet and follow the reading challenges.

The UPS/Buffalo Bills Hit the Books program will begin July 1 and will be played in addition to "Escape into Books." Every book read by a participant in grades kindergarten through 12, between July 1 to July 31, gives the participants a chance for prizes and tickets to the Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions game on October 27.

Special summer programs will begin with a chat with Lyndsay Wall, Olympic hockey champion, on Thursday, July 11 at 3 p.m. Rock and roll reading with Bart and Kevin is scheduled for Thursday, July 18 at 3 p.m. Meet Bats, presented by the Rochester Museum and Science Center, will be on Thursday, July 25 at 3 p.m. An old-fashioned Birthday Party will be celebrated on Thursday, August 1 at 10 a.m. An end of the summer reading program, bagel party and drawing will be held on Thursday, August 8 beginning at 2 p.m.

All of the programs require registration (293-2009 or e-mail: newmanriga@hotmail.com)
